Grebenstein lies west of the Reinhardswald between Kassel and Hofgeismar on the river Esse . The ruins of Grebenstein Castle stand above the town .

Grebenstein borders in the north on the city of Hofgeismar , in the north-east on the community-free area Gutsgebiet Reinhardswald , in the east on the city Immenhausen , in the south-east on the community Espenau , in the south and west on the community Calden , and in the northwest on the city Liebenau (all in the district of Kassel).

According to the Hessian municipal constitution, the mayor is the chairman of the magistrate , which in the city of Grebenstein includes seven honorary councilors in addition to the mayor . Danny Sutor has been mayor since October 1, 2010. He was re-elected in March 2016. Predecessors were:

Buildings
- historic old town with the medieval towers of the city fortifications, the town hall, the Protestant city church (formerly: Liebfrauenkirche) and numerous half-timbered houses, some of which stand above medieval cellars
- Ruins of Grebenstein Castle (on the castle hill on the southern edge of the city) from the 13th century
- Former location of Haldessen Castle (near the Oberhalsehen farm) from the 14th century
- The former Grebensteiner Landwehr between Grebenstein and Hofgeismar can only be seen in a few places today, be it as wood or as traces of moats; Between Grebenstein and Friedrichsthal, near the L 3233, there are still traces in the form of trench remains. The five former guards that secured the Landwehr have all disappeared.

Grebenstein is on federal highway 83 .
The city lies on the Kassel – Warburg railway line and is served by the RegioTram (RT1 line). Regional Express trains on the Kassel-Hagen connection no longer stop in Grebenstein since the timetable change in December 2013. The city of Grebenstein belongs to the North Hessian Transport Association .
The 27.92 km long section of the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Nordbahn from Grebenstein via Hümme to Bad Karlshafen , which opened on March 30, 1848, was the first railway in the Electorate of Hesse . 1872 was route for a railway accident moved out of the city and New around them traced out .
