history
The story of Sarsina begins with a settlement of the Umbrians on the Savio in the fourth century BC. With the influence of Rome, the city became an ally of the city on the Tiber in 266 BC. The city, known as Sassina , continued to gain importance through the stationing of troops until it was probably destroyed by barbarians at the end of the third century AD. The city's first bishop, Vicinius, was also named at the end of the third century. The diocese continued until 1986. Then it was merged with the diocese of Cesena to form the diocese of Cesena-Sarsina .
In a retaliatory action in 1944, the German Wehrmacht killed or injured a large number of people and burned down several public buildings and private houses.
