Forli (alttosk. FURLI or sometimes Frulli ) shelter since the consolidation of the Papal States , which was concluded in this case 1503/04, the direct rule of the Church. Before that, it had been a free city since the 9th century, and until around 1500 it was subordinate to a vicariate and his family. From 1315 to 1480 it was under the Signoria of the Ordelaffi . These were expelled in 1480 at the instigation of Pope Sixtus IV , who gave his nephew Girolamo Riario the county as a papal fief. The Riario and Caterina Sforza stayed until they were expelled in 1499/1500. Forlì was then part of the short-lived sphere of power of Cesare Borgia , before the conquest after the death of Pope Alexander VI. decayed. The transition to direct rule by the church took place in 1503/04, when an attempt by the Ordelaffi to return was unsuccessful.
