Carlo Matteucci

Carlo Matteucci (born June 20, 1811 in Forlì , Romagna, † June 25, 1868 in Ardenza near Livorno ) was an Italian physicist and neurophysiologist.

Matteucci studied mathematics at the University of Bologna from 1825 to 1828 . After receiving his doctorate in 1829, he continued his studies at the École polytechnique in Paris and in Bologna (1832), Florence, Ravenna (1837) and Pisa. In 1840 he became professor of physics at the University of Pisa .

Inspired by the work of Luigi Galvani , he carried out bioelectrical experiments. Matteucci was the first to succeed in directly measuring the electrical current of a muscle. His research influenced Johannes Peter Müller and Emil Heinrich du Bois-Reymond .

From 1847 Matteucci was active in politics, from 1860 he was a senator . In 1862 Matteucci became Minister of Education.

Matteucci was awarded the Copley Medal in 1844 . Since 1857 he was a corresponding member of the Académie des Sciences and since 1867 a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . The genus Matteuccia with the species Matteuccia struthiopteris ( ostrich fern ) is named after him.
