Savignano sul Rubicone (until 1933 Savignano di Romagna ) is a municipality in the province of Forlì-Cesena in the Italian region Emilia-Romagna , about 90 km south-east of Bologna and about 30 km south-east of Forlì . 17,948 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) live here on an area of 23.2 km².

The municipality of Savignano sul Rubicone contains the Frazioni Capanni, Fiumicino, and Savignano a Mare.

Savignano sul Rubicone borders the municipalities of Gatteo , Longiano , San Mauro Pascoli and Santarcangelo di Romagna .

The municipality takes its name from the Rubicon river . A combination of natural and man-made corrections changed the course of the original Rubicon as it had been during Julius Caesar's historic crossing. The exact location of the original river was unknown for centuries. Since 1991 the Fiumicino, a river that flows through Savignano sul Rubicone, has been believed to be the original Rubicon.

The Accademia dei Filopatridi goes back to the Accademia degli Incolti , which was founded in the middle of the 17th century, but disappeared in the course of the 18th century. Giovanni Cristofano Amaduzzi († 1792) donated 4,000 books to revitalize an academy in his hometown, but it was not re-established until 1801. The estate and correspondence of the philologist Girolamo Amati are in the possession of the academy.
