San Mauro Pascoli is a municipality with 12,062 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Forlì-Cesena in the Emilia-Romagna region in Italy .

The community was called San Mauro di Romagna until 1932 . It got the new name in memory of the poet Giovanni Pascoli , who was born here in 1855.

geography

The center is about seven kilometers from the Adriatic Sea . The municipality also extends to the coast with the district of San Mauro Mare . The city of Rimini is about 15 kilometers southeast, and the city of Cesena 18 kilometers northwest .

Neighboring communities are Bellaria-Igea Marina , Rimini , Santarcangelo di Romagna and Savignano sul Rubicone .

The Autostrada A14 (Autostrada Adriatica) runs on the northern outskirts .

history

Villa Torlonia - La Torre

San Mauro was named Fundum Sancti Mauri in a testimony in 1191 . In the 12th century there was a church dedicated to San Mauro, Bishop of Cesena . At that time San Mauro belonged to the area of Savignano sul Rubicone .

In 1247 San Mauro belonged to the Malatesta family . In the 15th century the fief of Pope Paul II was given to the Zampeschi family. In 1590 San Mauro belonged again to the Papal States .

At the end of the 17th century, San Mauro again belonged to Savignano sul Rubicone and in the 18th century the princes of Torlonia founded an estate , the Villa Torlonia .

San Mauro became an independent municipality in 1827, and in 1932 it was given a new addition to its name in memory of the poet Giovanni Pascoli .

During the Second World War the place was badly damaged.

The Roman kilns

Casa Pascoli

Near Piazza Mazzini is the house where the poet Giovanni Pascoli was born , where he was born on December 31, 1855 and where he spent his childhood. The Casa Pascoli has been an Italian national monument since 1924 . This site was also badly damaged during the Second World War (only the kitchen remained). A memorial stone reproduces some verses from Pascoli's poem Casa mia (My home) : " M'era la casa avanti / tacita al vespro puro / tutta fiorita al muro / di rose rampicanti ".

The "Museo Casa Pascoli" is located in the house. The museum owns objects by the poet and his mother: the cradle, the furniture in Pascoli’s study in Bologna , all the first editions of his poems, as well as photos, dedications and collections of letters from the Fondo Murari (letters from Pascoli that were kept by his sister Ida).

La Torre

Villa Torlonia, or La Torre , is an estate that was founded in the 18th century by the Torlonia princes. It is located three kilometers from the town center. Nowadays cultural events and events are held here.

Chapel of the Madonna dell'Acqua

The small chapel of the Madonna dell'Acqua was built in 1616 by the decision of the Episcopal Vicar of Rimini and was rebuilt after being destroyed during the Second World War . The chapel is located in the gardens of Casa Pascoli . Today it serves as a war memorial .
