  • The Autostrada A14 ( Italian for “Autobahn A14”), also called Autostrada Adriatica (Italian for “ Adria -Autobahn”), is an Italian motorway that connects the north of the country with the extreme southeast. It begins near Bologna , leads through major cities such as Ancona , Pescara and Bari , and ends at Taranto . Like most motorways in Italy, the A14 is toll road along its entire length and with a length of 743.4 km it is the second longest motorway in the country.

The A14 crosses a total of four other motorways on its way. In detail from north to south: The A1 , A13 , A25 and the A16 .

    course

The A14 is the second longest motorway in Italy and an important north-south connection between Italy and the A1. Almost its entire length runs along the Italian Adriatic coast.

    Section Bologna - Rimini

    The A14 near Forlì

In this section, the motorway leads eastwards on the edge of the Po Valley to the Adriatic coast. This section of the A14 does not follow the course of the Adriatic. It connects the tourist resorts of Rimini and Riccione with Bologna .

The A14 starts west of Bologna (capital of Emilia-Romagna ) in northern Italy. It branches off from the A1 ( Autostrada del Sole ). After a few kilometers, the first branch of the A14 motorway joins with a connection to the A1 (direction: Florence ). From here the tangent from Bologna to the Bologna San Lazzaro junction runs past as a parallel lane for local traffic. The tangent is toll-free. In Bologna Arcoveggio which opens A13 from Padua.

The motorway heads east along the foothills of the Apennines and near the ancient Roman road Via Emilia , which is classified as State Road 9 . Passing the towns of Castel San Pietro Terme and Imola , a motorway branches off to Ravenna at Faenza . Other cities on this section are Forlì and Cesena . At Rimini the A14 reaches the Adriatic Sea.

    Rimini - Pescara section

The node with the A25 at Pescara

This 230 km long section is located in the Italian regions of Marche and Abruzzo . The A14 continues almost directly by the sea, parallel to Strada Statale 16 Adriatica , which was the most important road in this section before the construction of the A14.

After the regional border with Emilia-Romagna, the motorway leads past the cities of Pesaro , Fano and Senigallia and comes to the capital of the Marche, Ancona . At Fano the SS 73 bis branches off, which joins Strada Statale 3 Via Flaminia at Fossombrone and leads to Rome . The SS 76 branches off in Ancona and runs to Perugia . South of Ancona, the motorway gives way to the Adriatic coast inland for a short time. At Civitanova Marche it reaches the sea again. Between Civitanova Marche and San Benedetto del Tronto , where the Tronto river forms the border with the Abruzzo region , the A14 runs directly on the Adriatic Sea.

The A14 reaches the port city of Pescara after the villages of Alba Adriatica , Giulianova , Pineto and Città Sant'Angelo and bypasses it inland. It branches off the A25 , which leads to Rome via Torano and the A24 .

    Section Pescara - Taranto

South of the junction A14 / A25, the A14 turns towards the Adriatic coast, past the towns of Ortona and Vasto to the border of the Apulia region . In the short section in Molise it leads past the port city of Termoli . In Apulia the A14 turns inland again and passes through the plains of Apulia past the cities of San Severo , Foggia and Cerignola to Canosa . It meets the A16 there . In the last section it touches the cities of Barletta , Bisceglie , Molfetta and leads again near the sea to Bari . Inland, the A14 leads to its end point in Massafra and joins the SS 7, which after a short distance reaches the port city of Taranto .

    State of development

The A14 is mostly expanded to four lanes . Only the north-western end between the A1 near Bologna and the Rimini- Nord junction has six lanes. It is currently being expanded to six lanes as far as Pescara. The Bologna bypass also has additional parallel lanes for local traffic.

In particular, between Rimini and Pescara, the A14 runs through hilly land with numerous bridges and tunnels. In the direction of Taranto, 19,162 m are led through tunnels , in the direction of Bologna 19,691 m.

    Construction projects on the A14

Some important construction projects are planned along the A14. The most important construction project is the six-lane expansion between Rimini and Porto Sant'Elpidio.

Six-lane expansion Bologna B.go Panigale - Bologna San Lazzaro

Between km 8 and km 14, the A14 is the Tangenziale from Bologna. In this section, the six-lane expansion took place between 2003 and 2007. The opening and handover to traffic took place in January 2008. The construction costs of 59.4 million euros include the construction of a new junction (Bologna Fiera) and the construction of 9 km of noise barriers contain.

    Six-lane expansion Rimini north - Porto Sant'Elpidio

Between Rimini / Nord and Porto Sant'Elpidio, the motorway was rehabilitated over a length of 154.7 kilometers and expanded to six lanes with hard shoulder. The construction work included the preparation for the construction of three new junctions ( Valle del Rubicone , Montemarciano and Porto Sant'Elpidio ) and the construction of 95.8 kilometers of noise barriers . The construction of the junction points Pesaro centro , Fano nord and Ancona ovest was also planned, but this was not realized. The total cost is 2.444 billion euros.

    More plans

The motorway is to be expanded to eight lanes over a length of 34.1 kilometers between Bologna / San Lazzaro and the junction of the “A14dir” to Ravenna. A new junction, Valle del Rubicone, has already been built between Cesena Sud and Rimini Nord.

    history

    Bologna's transport network 1960: A1 just completed, without A13 and A14

In the early 1960s, construction work began on a Bologna bypass. The Autostrada del Sole (A1) between Milan and Bologna was opened in 1959, the section between Bologna and Florence in 1960 . The Act 729 of 1961 (project for establishing a basic network of motorways) called for the construction of the A13 and the A14, which were opened in 1966 between Bologna-Padova (A13) and Bologna-Cesena (A14). In 1967 the Tangenziale (city bypass, 24.6 km long) was completed together with the nodes between the A1, A13 and A14.

The entire first section between Bologna and Ancona was opened on May 31, 1969. The section between Ancona and Pescara followed on April 14, 1973, together with the Lanciano - Canosa section. In 1973 the motorway between Bologna and Bari was completely passable. This included the section of the A17 , which became part of the A14 and A16. The extension to the end point at Taranto was opened on December 6, 1975.

  • Bologna's transport network with this motorway branch (Ramo Casalecchio)

This highway branch connects the A14 with the A1 at Casalecchio di Reno . The Casalecchio di Reno junction is located on the five-kilometer section. Its task is to direct the traffic leading from Padua (A13) to Florence (A1). Otherwise a 15 km detour would be necessary. Traffic to Milan, coming from Padua, goes directly to the A1 via the A14. The branch has four lanes with hard shoulder.

  • This 4.5 km long motorway branch, which is part of the A14 but is toll-free, is located in Bari . It connects the Bari nord exit with the 8th junction of the four-lane "Tangente von Bari". This branch of the motorway has two junctions, Bari zona industriale and Modugno . When the A14 did not yet lead to Tarant, this branch represented the end of the motorway that was then classified as the A17. It was known as the D94. However, it is always signposted as part of the A14 on information boards.
