Andria is an Italian city in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani , Apulia region . It has 99,307 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and an area of 407 km² .
The neighboring municipalities are Barletta , Canosa di Puglia , Corato , Minervino Murge , Ruvo di Puglia , Spinazzola and Trani .
history
Andria was founded around 1046. Isabella II , the second wife of Frederick II, died here in 1228 , after giving birth to her son Konrad, who later became Konrad IV . Andria was once the favorite seat of Emperor Frederick II , who had the imposing Castel del Monte built with eight towers in the 13th century . Two of his four wives are said to be buried in Andria.
The Carafa ruled the city until 1799 when it was captured by French troops after a long siege. After the Restoration of the Bourbons , Andria became a center of the Italian Risorgimento movement. Since 2008 Andria has been one of the three capitals of the newly founded province of Barletta-Andria-Trani .

- The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta was built in the 12th century by the Normans on the basis of a previous building from the 7th / 8th centuries. Century, which today forms the crypt .

The town's main economic activity is winemaking and olive and almond cultivation. In Andria there are parts of vineyards for the production of DOC wines from Castel del Monte , Barletta and Trani .
Andria is the place of origin of the burrata , a cream cheese similar to mozzarella.
