Lino Banfi (2007)

Lino Banfi (actually Pasquale Zagaria ; born July 11, 1936 in Andria ) is an Italian actor .

Known for his Apulian accent, he is considered by many to be one of Italy's most distinctive and talented comedians in the post-war era. His erotic comedies of the 1970s were criticized in their day for scenes of nudity and vulgar language. Together with his colleagues Lando Buzzanca , Renzo Montagnani , Mario Carotenuto , Gianfranco D'Angelo , Aldo Maccione and Alvaro Vitali , he made these “Italian comedies” very successful and popular.

Life

Banfi spent his childhood and youth in Canosa di Puglia . He has been married to his wife Lucia since 1962 and has a son (Walter) and a daughter (Rosanna), who also both became actors. His Catholic family would have liked to send him to a priestly school, but he was more drawn to the "spettacolo" as a singer at festivals in his vicinity.

At the age of 18, Banfi went to Milan in 1954 and, after starting out, played in amateur theater groups at the theaters of Milan, Turin and Genoa. Right there, after working with Arturo Vetrani, he started his comedian career. Here he brought typical elements of his native region such as the dialect and the type of language and its gestures. He started under the pseudonym Lino Zaga. It was then the famous Totò who advised him to change his last name to Banfi.

From the mid-1960s he not only turned away from revue and cabaret, but was also used in numerous films; he was one of the figureheads of the Italian sexy comedies , which reached their peak between 1974 and 1982. Banfi was usually not required there; on only a few occasions he was able to show his skills, for example in Dino Risi's Il commissario Lo Gatto 1986. In the 1980s he was one of the favorite actors of Nero Parentis .

In the new millennium, Banfi was successful with the frequently repeated television series Un medico in famiglia .

Banfi is the UNICEF ambassador for his home country.
