occupation
- Libero Martini
- interpreted by Lino Banfi , is the grandfather and - especially during the absence of his son Lele for several seasons - the head of the family. He worked as a railroad worker all his life and is known for his witty inserts. Widowed since the first episode, he constantly dreams of his deceased wife, but also falls in love a few times; first in Marité, then in Antoinette and finally in Enrica, his son's mother-in-law, whom he married at the end of the sixth season. His motto is: "Una parola è troppa e due sono poche" (in German roughly: "One word is too much and two are little"). In the sixth season he appears less often due to his move to Apulia .
- Gabriele "Lele" Martini
- interpreted by Giulio Scarpati , is a doctor and the father of the family. He is mainly there during the first two seasons and then disappears almost completely from the scene for several seasons. After his guest appearance in the first episode of the third season and the last episode of the fourth season, he finally returns to the series for the sixth season. He is the son of Libero Martini and father of Maria, Ciccio and Annuccia and the twins Libero jun. (also called Bobò) and Elena. Constantly busy with his medical work and always on cloud nine, he cares wholeheartedly about his children's problems, but does not necessarily notice them when they really have them. At the beginning of the series, Lele is a widower, who two years ago lost his first wife, Elena ( Beatrice Bocci ), to her death and is now on her own with his father, raising three children. His life seems to take a turn when he falls in love with Irene ( Edi Angelillo ). But the relationship between the two is shaken several times until it breaks completely. Lele discovers his love for his sister-in-law Alice and confesses his love to her. They get married and have children together: the twins Libero (also called Bobò) and Elena. After starting out together in Australia , where he worked as a doctor, he became a lecturer at the Sorbonne in Paris . After separating from Alice in season six, he returns with the twins to his family in Italy for a research semester.

Initially unpopular with grandfather, he manages to get into harmony with the Martini family. Emilio carries out his work extremely conscientiously and is sometimes strict with his colleagues.

Guido then finds a job in the same clinic where Lele worked. Over the course of the series, he has an affair with Maria. The two later marry and have a daughter, Paola Enrica Ave (Palù). She falls in love with Guido, whom she marries after some adversity. At the beginning of the fifth season she returns from Africa, where she and Guido supported a medical humanitarian aid organization. On the black continent, she had a profound, terrible experience that she never spoke about to anyone, not even her husband Guido. She had to choose which of two children she would save. Determined not to pursue the study of medicine any further, she went through a period of maturation.
