Research semester

A research semester (also known as a research semester ) is a semester for which professors are released from teaching and administrative tasks for the purpose of research . The professors' salaries will continue to be paid in full during this period. The period between the individual research semesters that must be regularly spent at the university is usually between 6 and 10 semesters.

The application must contain a detailed description of the planned research project. For the approval of the application by the faculty, representation by specialist colleagues or teaching assignments must be guaranteed and a positive statement from the faculty must be available. After the research semester, a report on the work or the publications that have been made must be written.

In English, a research semester is generally referred to as a sabbatical. In contrast to research semesters, sabbaticals are also common in other professional groups (especially in large companies).

Many universities have other free semester regulations for functionaries such as rectors or deans, e.g. B. in Austria.
