Trips by naturalists mainly serve to broaden their knowledge in the fields of biology and geosciences and often lead to the discovery of new species , geological formations or to their better classification . The documentation is mostly done photographically , any cartography with terrestrial or aerial photogrammetry.
Study trips in the fields of the arts and the humanities are often aimed at foreign cities in order to consult the libraries , academy or research institutes , art collections and archives located there. Often they are also used to study the scientific or art object itself, for example paintings , excavations , monuments , rock formations or foreign animal and plant species .
A special form of the research trip is the expedition that usually leads to remote and inaccessible areas .
