Ruvo di Puglia is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 25,090 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Bari in the Apulia region . The municipality is located in the middle of the Murgia , a karst landscape in southern Italy, about 30 kilometers west of Bari . It borders on the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani .
history
Greek settlements existed in this area since the 9th century BC. Coins from the 3rd century BC indicate the village with the name Rhyps or Rhybasteion . The Romans built a fortress here on the Via Traiana . A change station was previously known under the name Rubi . In the Middle Ages, the settlement came into the possession of the Counts of Conversano , and later the Neapolitan noble Carafa family .
