Cassamassima is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) in Apulia .
geography
The community has 19,854 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located in the metropolitan city of Bari . The place is about 18 kilometers south of Bari on the eastern edge of the Murgia .
history
There are 79 Apulian menhirs . Some of them are geometrically designed and very slim. The menhir of Casamassima has a height of up to 4.7 m.
The establishment of the place is assumed for the early Middle Ages , between the 8th and 10th centuries. The oldest surviving mention of the place comes from 962. Under Frederick II , the settlement was part of his dominion. A little later (1195) it was given to the Massimi family as a fief . The name of the place is derived from this. In 1348 the place became part of the rule of Taranto .

The A 14 autostrada runs a little to the west of the village . The place is connected to the Strada Statale 100 from Bari to Taranto.
Casamassima has a train station on the Bari – Martina Franca – Taranto line .
