The Bari – Martina Franca – Taranto (Taranto) railway is part of the Ferrovie del Sud Est (FSE) network, which has been part of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS) since August 4, 2016 .

history

Today's route from Bari to Taranto is historically composed of three sections with different origins:

Ferrovie Sussidiate

Course of the Bari Mungivacca – Putignano line

The Bari – Locorotondo and Bari Mungivacca – Putignano railway lines were built by the Ferrovie Sussidiate . The Bari Mungivacca – Putignano railway branches off from the Bari – Locorotondo main line at Bari Mungivacca station and joins the main line again after 43.3 km in Putignano. The opening of this network took place in sections:

  • Bari – Putignano on August 12, 1900,
  • Putignano – Locorotondo on December 14, 1903 and
  • Bari Mungivacca – Putignano on September 5, 1905

Ferrovie Salentine

After the First World War , the Ferrovie Salentine tried to expand their route network. One implemented project was to connect the terminus of their Lecce - Francavilla Fontana line with the southern tip of the Ferrovie Sussidiate network in Locorotondo. This happened in several stages, the last of which, the Locorotondo – Martina Franca section, went into operation on December 24, 1925.

Strade Ferrate Pugliesi

To build a railway from Martina Franca to Taranto, a separate company was founded, the Strade Ferrate Pugliesi . The banker Carlo Raffaele Bombrini , who held large shares in other regional railway companies, such as the Ferrovie Ferrovio Salentine , played a key role in it . Construction of the Martina Franca – Taranto line began on December 13, 1930. The line went into operation on April 22, 1931, although the Ministry of Transport ( Ministero delle comunicazioni ) did not approve it until May 1, 1931.

FSE

From autumn 1931, a number of small regional railway companies in Apulia merged to form the Ferrovie del Sud Est. These included the above-mentioned companies. As a result, the original kilometrage was replaced by the current one, creating the Bari – Taranto line. Since 2012, the route has been electrified with funds from the European Union . In the course of this modernization, bridges are being renewed and noise barriers are being built.

Route description

The line is single-track , not electrified and 112.5 km long. The only multi-track sections in the entire network of the FSE exist between the train stations Bari and Bari Mungivacca and between Noicàttaro and Rutigliano .

business

Line 1 of the FSE runs on the Bari – Martina Franca – Taranto line, and line 1bis on the Bari Mungivacca – Putignano line. As a rule, vehicles from the FSE ATR 220 series are used here. The line is the only one in the network of the former FSE on which locomotive-hauled trains run with double-decker cars .
