Castellana Grotte is an Italian city with 19,562 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Bari in Apulia .

Location and dates

Castellana Grotte is located 42 km southeast of Bari . The neighboring municipalities are Alberobello , Conversano , Monopoli , Noci , Polignano a Mare and Putignano .

history

The place developed from the year 1000, was destroyed and rebuilt in the 14th century. The place was part of the fiefdom of S. Benedotto and a subject of dispute between the bishops of Conversano and the local church. Since 1950 the place has been called Castellana Grotte to refer to the grotto.

Attractions

Opening of the cave

The Grotte di Castellana are caves in the municipality. The caves were discovered in 1938 and can be visited. The caves include the Franco Anelli Speleological Museum and the Sirio Observatory.

The Chiesa Madre was built in the 14th century in the Romanesque-Apulian style.
