Putignano is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) in Apulia .

geography

The community has 26,508 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located in the metropolitan city of Bari , about 50 kilometers southeast of Bari and about 65 kilometers north of Taranto .

history

The municipality is located in the center of ancient Peuketien . The area was heavily influenced by Greek culture . Around 1000 the area fell to the Benedictine monastery in Monopoli . Over the centuries the lords of Putignano changed several times.

Carnival has been celebrated in Putignano since 1394 . It is the oldest carnival tradition in Italy.

The place has a train station on the Bari – Martina Franca – Taranto railway line .
