Bitetto

Bitetto is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 11,923 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Bari in Apulia . The municipality is located about 13.5 kilometers southwest of Bari .

history

Archaeological finds indicate settlement as early as the Middle Italian Bronze Age (from the Protoappenninic, 16th / 15th century BC). The oval, lightly sunk structures made of dry masonry that were discovered in two areas of today's city center probably date from this time . Isolated finds come from the early Iron Age . Furthermore, there were remains of a settlement that began in the 4th century BC. Existed. Under the leadership of Meles of Bari there was a battle between the insurgents and the Byzantines here in 1011. From 1089 Bitetto became a bishopric through a bull by Pope Urban II . In 1798 this bishopric became extinct. It has been a titular bishopric since 1968.

Cattedrale di San Michele Arcangelo

The Cathedral of the Archangel Michael is an example of Apulian Romanesque. From the outside you can see three gates, the middle one shows two stone lions. Inside there are three naves that have been renewed several times.

The old Church of St. Mary has an unadorned facade with a gate and bell tower on the right. Inside there are three naves and you can see paintings on leather and a wooden tabernacle .

The monastery of Blessed Jacob , founded in 1432, was the seat of the Minorites for a long time ; today it is used as a theological educational institution. It is known for the presence of the remains of the Blessed Jacob , a Franciscan whose body has remained intact.

The memorial in honor of the fallen is dedicated to the Bitetto soldiers who fell during the First World War. It is crowned by a winged Victoria.

The electrified Bari – Taranto railway , where the Bitetto-Palo di Colle station is located , runs through the village .
