Polignano a Mare [poliˈɲːaːno a ˈmːaːre] is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 17,861 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Bari in Apulia . The place is located directly on the Adriatic Sea , about 33 kilometers southeast of Bari .

In the district of San Vito there is a large Benedictine monastery complex .

history

The place was already settled in early times. Later, the Greeks probably founded the city of Neapolis here in Apulia (not to be confused with Neapolis in Campania, today's Naples ). In any case, it should have been located between the ancient Barium (Bari) and Gnathia (or Egnatia; today's Fasano ). From the Roman times a bridge of a branch of the Via Traiana has been preserved; Polignano was an important changing station to the seaport in Brundisium (today's Brindisi ).

Economy and Transport

The beach is important for tourism. The quality of the beach has been awarded the Bandiera Blu , which corresponds to the highest quality level in Italy. The Strada Statale 16 Adriatica ( European route 55 ) leads around the town from Cerignola via Barletta , Bari to Brindisi, which is developed like a motorway. A railway connection exists with a station on the Bari- Lecce section of the Ferrovia Adriatica .
