Lucas di Grassi (born August 11, 1984 in São Paulo ) is a Brazilian racing car driver and CEO of Roborace . He drove in the GP2 series from 2006 to 2009 and was runner-up there in 2007. In 2010 he started in Formula 1 . From 2012 to 2016 he took part in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), in which a second place in the 2016 Drivers World Championship was his best result. He has been competing in the FIA Formula E Championship since 2014, and was champion in its third season.

Career

Beginnings in motorsport (1996-2005)

Di Grassi began his racing career in karting . In 2002 he moved into Formula racing and he raced in the Brazilian Formula Renault . There he was runner-up behind Sérgio Jimenez . In 2003 he competed in the South American Formula 3 Championship and again won a runner-up title. He also made his debut in the Formula 3 Euro Series as a substitute for Robert Kubica for the Prema Powerteam and competed in four races. In 2004 he drove in the British Formula 3 championship for Hitech Racing . With two wins he finished eighth in the overall standings and was also the best driver on his team. At the Macau Grand Prix di Grassi came third this year. In 2005 he returned to the Formula 3 Euro Series and started as Paul di Resta's team-mate for Manor Motorsport . Di Grassi had his team-mates under control and with a win at the end of the season finished third overall behind the dominant ASM drivers Lewis Hamilton and Adrian Sutil . Di Grassi competed again this season at the Macau Grand Prix and won the prestigious race ahead of Robert Kubica. Due to his good performance, in 2005 he was given the opportunity to take part in Formula 1 test drives for Renault .

GP2 series (2006-2009)

In 2006 di Grassi started alongside Sergio Hernández for Durango in the GP2 series . Fifth place was his best result. He finished his first season in 17th place overall. With 8 to 1 points he prevailed internally against Hernández. In the 2007 season he started for the ART Grand Prix, the master team of the previous seasons. Di Grassi won a race in Istanbul and was on the podium seven times. Di Grassi had title chances until the last race and was finally defeated by Timo Glock with 77 to 88 points . Di Grassi was runner-up in the GP2 series. He had several teammates who had a total of nine points.

Di Grassi for Campos in the 2008 GP2 series

In 2008 he was hired as a replacement and test driver by the Renault Formula 1 team. From the fourth race weekend of the 2008 season, he also drove back in the GP2 series. He was signed by Campos Grand Prix to replace Ben Hanley . His teammate was Vitaly Petrov . Di Grassi was right at the front and crossed the finish line three times in second and once in fourth on the first two race weekends. At the Hungaroring he achieved his second GP2 victory in the main race. He celebrated another victory at the next race weekend in Valencia . At the last race weekend in Monza , he won the main race. Di Grassi was on the podium six times and won three races. Although di Grassi missed three race weekends, he finished third in the overall standings behind Giorgio Pantano and Bruno Senna with 63 points. With that he prevailed internally against Petrov, who had scored 39 points. His Renault test driver colleagues Romain Grosjean and Sakon Yamamoto drove like di Grassi in the GP2 series.

In autumn 2008, Lucas di Grassi took part in Formula 1 test drives for Renault F1 and Honda Racing F1 . After di Grassi had not received a Formula 1 cockpit for 2009 , partly because of the withdrawal of Honda, he stayed in the GP2 series and started for Racing Engineering , the team with which Giorgio Pantano won the championship title in 2008. Di Grassi won the sprint race in Istanbul and was on the podium in seven other races. He finished the season in third place overall. This made di Grassi the first GP2 driver to have been among the top three drivers for three years in a row. With 63 to 4 points he clearly won the internal duel against his teammate Dani Clos . In Formula 1, from the European Grand Prix , di Grassi again acted as a Renault substitute driver.

Formula 1 (2010–2012)

Di Grassi in the Virgin at the 2010 Malaysian Grand Prix

For the 2010 season , di Grassi was Timo Glock's teammate in the debut Formula 1 team Virgin Racing . After he was eliminated in the first two races with technical defects, he reached the finish in 14th place for the first time at the third Grand Prix in Malaysia . This result remained his best result of the season. An accident at the Japanese Grand Prix caused a stir . On the way to the starting grid, he lost control of his vehicle. He damaged his car so badly that he couldn't start. He finished the season in 24th place in the drivers' championship. Like Glock, he remained without points. For the next season he lost his cockpit to Jérôme D'Ambrosio .

In 2011 Di Grassi couldn't find a racing cockpit and eventually became a development driver for the tire manufacturer Pirelli . In 2012 he held this position together with Jaime Alguersuari .

Endurance World Championship and FIA Formula E Championship (since 2012)

In 2012 di Grassi competed for Audi Sport Team Joest in the newly founded FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). He reached third place and was 22nd in the drivers' world championship. He also drove a V8 Supercars race in 2012 . In addition, di Grassi was hired as a test driver for the FIA Formula E Championship in 2012 . He was involved in the development and test work for the Spark-Renault SRT 01E .

In 2013 di Grassi received an Audi cockpit at two WEC races. Among other things, he made his debut at the 2013 Le Mans 24-hour race . Di Grassi and his teammates Marc Gené and Oliver Jarvis finished third in both races. In the drivers' world championship, the three finished ninth. Di Grassi also took part in an ALMS race for Joest .

In 2014 di Grassi received a permanent WEC cockpit at Audi Sport Team Joest. He succeeded Allan McNish and team-mate of Loïc Duval and Tom Kristensen . At Le Mans Duval was represented by Gené due to an injury. Di Grassi, Gené and Kristensen crossed the finish line in second place. Di Grassi and Kristensen finished the season in fourth place in the drivers' world championship. Three second places were her best results. In 2014 di Grassi also drove a race in the Stock Car Brasil . In the FIA Formula E championship, di Grassi received a cockpit from Audi Sport ABT for the first 2014/15 season . Di Grassi won the first Formula E race, the Beijing ePrix . At the second ePrix in Putrajaya , di Grassi achieved second place from 18th place on the grid. In the third race, the Punta del Este ePrix , he also achieved a podium finish with third place. In the next ePrix in Buenos Aires , di Grassi retired while in the lead after an accident. After leading the championship after the first five races, he lost the lead after the fifth race. With a third place in Long Beach he took the lead again. A race later in Monaco , di Grassi achieved another podium with a second place. In the following Berlin ePrix , di Grassi was in the lead for a long time and was the first to cross the finish line. However, since his front wing did not comply with the regulations, he was disqualified. Di Grassi thereby lost the championship lead. In the next race in Moscow di Grassi achieved second place. Di Grassi finally finished the season in third place overall.

In 2015 di Grassi stayed with Duval at Audi Sport Team Joest. Kristensen has been replaced by Oliver Jarvis . The three drivers achieved the only podium finish in Austin as third and finished fourth in the drivers' world championship. Di Grassi also made a guest appearance in Stock Car Brasil. In addition, di Grassi stayed with Abt in Formula E in the 2015/16 season . At the season opener in Bejing , he finished second. He won the next Putrajaya ePrix . In Punta del Este he finished second again and third in Buenos Aires . He then crossed the finish line first in Mexico City . However, as his car was too light, he was disqualified after the race. He finally won the ePrix that followed in Long Beach and took over the championship lead. After another victory in Paris , he finished third in Berlin . Di Grassi went into the last race weekend in London as overall leader . Before the start of the second and decisive race, he was tied with Sébastien Buemi . Because of the better placements, however, he was still in the lead. At the start, both title opponents collided with each other. Thus, the two tried to achieve the fastest race lap with the second car in order to win the championship with the bonus points. Buemi finally prevailed and won the FIA Formula E championship with 155 to 153 points ahead of di Grassi.

In 2016 di Grassi, Duval and Jarvis started again for Audi Sport Team Joest in the FIA World Endurance Championship. The trio won the 6-hour races in Spa-Francorchamps and Bahrain . The three racing drivers finished the season in second place in the world championship. After Audi withdrew from the FIA World Endurance Championship at the end of the season, di Grassi's involvement in the racing series ended. He also made two guest starts in the Audi Sport TT Cup in 2016 . In addition, di Grassi contested his third Formula E season for Abt in 2016/17 . As in the previous year, he finished second at the season opener, which this time took place in Hong Kong . He came third at the Buenos Aires ePrix . With two victories in Mexico City and Montreal and five other podium finishes in just one single ePrix without making it into the points, he won the driver's title with a 24 point lead over Buemi.

In September 2017, he was introduced as CEO of Roborace , the first racing series for autonomous electric vehicles . In the FIA Formula E championship, he competed again for the Abt team, which had now been taken over by Audi, but did not continue his involvement in the endurance world championship. It was only in the fifth race of the 2017/18 Formula E season in Mexico that di Grassi was able to achieve his first points result of the season with a ninth place. This was followed by four consecutive second places in the next races. He achieved his first win of the season at the Zurich E-Prix . Another win followed in the first race in New York City . With another second place in the second race in New York, he secured second place in the overall standings, while his Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler team won the team title for the first time.

In the 2018/19 season , di Grassi competed for Audi again. With two wins and another podium result, he finished third in the championship at the end of the season. In addition, with a victory he finished fourth in the overall ranking of the voestalpine European Races , in which only podium places in the races on the European continent were considered.
