The 2019/20 FIA Formula E Championship was the sixth season of the FIA Formula E Championship . It began on November 22, 2019 in Diriyya and ended on August 13, 2020 in Berlin . The season consisted of eleven races.
Changes in 2019/20
run
The Jakarta E-Prix and the Seoul E-Prix were new to the calendar . The London E-Prix returned to the racing calendar after three seasons. However, all three races were not held because of the COVID-19 pandemic .
The races in Bern , Hong Kong and Monaco were also canceled .
Technical regulations
The use of more than one engine was prohibited in the 2019/20 season; previously, technical solutions with two engines were also allowed.
Sporting regulations
An additional point was awarded to the driver who drove the fastest lap in group qualifying.
In the event of a full course yellow or a safety car phase, the drivers were deducted one kilowatt hour from the total available 52 kWh of total energy for every minute under these conditions.
The performance of the vehicles when using the attack mode increased from 225 kW to 235 kW. In addition, this could no longer be activated behind the safety car or in a full course yellow .
Teams
Mercedes entered the FIA Formula E championship and took over the starting position from HWA Racelab . Porsche entered the championship as the twelfth team, so the starting field increased to 24 vehicles.
Venturi competed as a Mercedes customer team. Before that, the team had used a drive developed jointly with ZF Friedrichshafen for four seasons , which was also delivered to HWA the previous season.
driver
Neel Jani made his comeback at Porsche in the FIA Formula E Championship. He had driven two races for Dragon Racing in the 2017/18 season . His teammate was André Lotterer , who had previously competed for DS Techeetah for two years .
Brendon Hartley made his debut for Dragon Racing in the championship, previously he had contested test drives for Porsche together with Jani. He succeeded Maximilian Günther , who switched to BMW i Andretti Motorsport . Günther replaced António Félix da Costa , who started for DS Techeetah. Hartley's teammate at Dragon Racing became Nico Müller , who was previously a test and reserve driver at Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler .
Nyck de Vries made his debut for Mercedes-Benz in the FIA Formula E Championship. He became a teammate of Stoffel Vandoorne , who had driven for HWA the previous season. James Calado made his debut with Jaguar Racing in the racing series, he succeeded Alex Lynn . Ma Qinghua replaced Tom Dillmann at NIO and thus returned to the racing series as a regular driver.
During the long break from racing due to the COVID-19 pandemic , there were several driver changes: René Rast replaced Daniel Abt after his suspension at Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler , and Pascal Wehrlein also left his Mahindra Racing team . The team signed Lynn as a replacement.
For his part, Abbot replaced Ma Qinghua at NIO. Hartley also left Dragon Racing during the break. The team replaced him with Sérgio Sette Câmara .
There was another driver change before the last two races: Tom Blomqvist replaced Calado, who was competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship at the same time .
Teams and drivers
All teams and drivers used the standard Spark SRT_05e chassis and Michelin tires .
Racing calendar
Original racing calendar
In 2019/20 fourteen races were to be held in twelve cities. On June 14, 2019, the FIA published the racing calendar, but two venues were missing. In one of the two races it was only announced that it would be held in China. The final race calendar was published on October 4, 2019; due to the political unrest in Hong Kong , the race planned there was canceled and replaced by a new run in Marrakech. Sanya has been announced as the venue for the race in China. In addition, Jakarta was a new city on the racing calendar, and the date at the beginning of June made several postponements necessary.

Revised racing calendar after the COVID-19 pandemic
On February 2, 2020, the organizers of the racing series announced that the race planned for March 21, 2020 in Sanya, China, would be canceled due to the coronavirus epidemic . However, it was kept open to postpone the race to an unspecified date. The same applies to the E-Prix planned for April 4 in Rome , which was announced on March 6, 2020.
On March 13, 2020, those responsible for the racing series decided to suspend the season for two months and no more races to be held until mid-May. This also meant the cancellation of the races in Paris and Seoul . All other races were subsequently canceled.
On June 17th, the racing series announced that it would continue the season from the beginning of August. All six scheduled races took place in Berlin on the apron of the closed Tempelhof Airport . There were three different routes, with each variant being used for two races. In the first two races, the route from the previous season was largely used, but it was used in the opposite direction. The third and fourth races then corresponded to the race from the previous season both in terms of the direction of travel and largely in terms of the route. Finally, the routing for the last two races itself was noticeably changed again by adding additional curves so that one lap now comprised 16 instead of ten curves.

The Formula E Race at Home Challenge was launched as a replacement for the canceled or postponed races . There were races for the regular Formula E drivers, in which the majority of the current starting field took part, and for so-called challengers . These were the fastest drivers who were able to qualify online with a fast lap time in the days before the race and invited personalities as well as substitute drivers from the series and racing drivers from other series. The rFactor 2 platform was used . The races took place in an elimination mode, in which the last-placed driver was eliminated after a completed lap until there were only twelve drivers in the race who were fighting for victory. The proceeds that were generated in the process went to UNICEF .
At the fifth race on the Formula E racetrack in Berlin (Tempelhof) , Daniel Abt was disqualified because he had the professional esports driver Lorenz Hörzing drive in his place. He also committed to donate 10,000 euros to a charity of his choice. A few days later he was suspended by his Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler team with immediate effect.
Stoffel Vandoorne won the overall ranking of Formula E drivers, Kevin Siggy that of the so-called Challenger .
