The 2016/17 FIA Formula E Championship was the third season of the FIA Formula E Championship . It began on October 9, 2016 in Hong Kong and ended on July 30, 2017 in Montreal . The season consisted of twelve races.

Lucas di Grassi ( ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport ) won the driver's title for the first time, Renault e.dams won the team championship for the third time.

Changes in 2016/17

run

The Brussels ePrix, Hong Kong ePrix , Marrakech ePrix , Montreal ePrix and New York City ePrix were new to the calendar . The Monaco ePrix returned to the calendar after a year. Instead the races in London , Beijing , Punta del Este and Putrajaya were canceled .

In the third year of the series, the Buenos Aires ePrix was the only race that was held on the same racetrack each season.

The Brussels ePrix was initially to be held in Heyselpark in the Laken district , in the immediate vicinity of the exhibition center and the Atomium . However, since the Couleur Café music festival will take place there at the same time, the move to the Elisabethpark in front of the National Basilica of the Sacred Heart in the Koekelberg district was announced in December 2016 . However, since important traffic connections have to be closed for this route and the race is to be held at the beginning of the Belgian summer holidays, these plans were also rejected by local politicians after a petition from residents. According to the promoter of the Brussels ePrix, the search for a further route is difficult, which is why the event is threatened with cancellation. The race was finally canceled at the beginning of March 2017.

In January 2017, the Senate of the City of Berlin decided not to hold the Berlin ePrix on the route used in the previous year , as there were complaints from residents due to traffic disruptions and noise emissions . However, the race was expressly not canceled, but should instead be carried out with a different route. In February 2017, the organizers of the FIA Formula E Championship announced that the race would be held on the Formula E race track in Berlin (Tempelhof) as in 2015 , but with a different route. In the wake of the cancellation of the Brussels ePrix, it was announced that the race, just like the races in Montreal and New York, will be held as a double header.

Technical regulations

A new body kit was planned for the vehicles for the third season . The changes, however, were limited to a new front wing, the look of which was more futuristic and should make the vehicle design stand out even further from other formula vehicles. Since the end plates were now attached to the vehicle nose with two struts, the wing was also more stable. In the first two Formula E seasons it happened several times that the vehicles lost the end plates of the front wing after being touched.

The maximum power during recuperation has been increased from 100 to 150 kilowatts; Williams Advanced Engineering has developed new batteries for this purpose . The vehicles' steering wheel has also been redesigned so that drivers no longer have to take their hands off the wheel to change the energy recovery when braking.

The minimum weight of the vehicles has been reduced from 888 kg to 880 kg. The weight of the tires alone was reduced by five kilograms, as Michelin developed the tires further.

The increase in the maximum output to 250 kW originally planned for the third season was postponed to the 2018/19 season at the beginning of 2016 .

Sporting regulations

In order to qualify for the e-license, drivers had to collect a certain number of points in other series from this season, similar to the super license for Formula 1. In addition, by participating in the FIA Formula E championship, the drivers also collected points for the super license. In previous seasons, this only applied to the champions of the FIA Formula E championship.

For the fastest lap in the race, there was now only one point instead of two.

Should a driver exceed the permissible energy limit, the vehicle's power would drop , a so-called power ramp down .

tires

Standard supplier Michelin developed a new tire for the 2016/17 season. This was also a profiled all-weather tire that, compared to the tires of the two previous seasons, reached the required tire temperature faster and offered more grip. In addition, the rolling resistance fell by 16 percent.

Teams

As the successor to the Trulli Formula E team , Jaguar Racing has now entered the FIA Formula E championship.

After the Chinese corporation Chinese Media Capital through the sports marketing company SECA ( S ports E ntertainment C ontent A ctivation) the team Aguri had bought the team now went by the name Techeetah at the start.

After Andretti decided not to use the self-developed drive in the preseason shortly before the start of the season and used the drive from the 2014/15 season, the team now started with the self-developed drive. In addition, the team announced a cooperation with BMW in the run-up to the season . Dragon Racing, which had previously competed as a Venturi customer team , now uses a drive developed by Faraday Future .

Techeetah started with the Renault drive unit, which Renault e.dams also used and was thus the only customer team in the championship.

driver

Jean-Éric Vergne moved to Techeetah after a season at DS Virgin . Formula E debutant José María López took his place .

Maro Engel entered the FIA Formula E Championship and contested the season with Venturi. With Felix Rosenqvist a third debutant started at Mahindra Racing as the successor to Bruno Senna . Adam Carroll and Mitch Evans have been announced as drivers for the new Jaguar team.

António Félix da Costa , who started for the Aguri team in the preseason, switched to Andretti, replacing Simona de Silvestro .

In January 2017, the organizers of the FIA Formula E Championship and the Mexico City ePrix announced that Esteban Gutiérrez would contest a “certain number of races”, including the 2017 Mexico City ePrix . It was not published which team Gutiérrez should compete for. In early March 2017, Techeetah announced that Gutiérrez had received a contract for the remainder of the season, replacing Ma Qinghua .

Because the Paris ePrix and the DTM race at the Lausitzring overlap , Mike Conway replaced Loïc Duval once , while Tom Dillmann was also supposed to replace Maro Engel once . While Conway already contested seven races for Venturi in the preseason, Dillmann made his debut in the FIA Formula E Championship.

After Dillmann scored points on his debut, Venturi announced before the Berlin ePrix that Dillmann would also compete for the team in the remaining races of the season instead of Stéphane Sarrazin . Sarrazin moved to Techeetah with immediate effect, where he replaced Gutiérrez. Gutiérrez contested the rest of the IndyCar Series 2017 for Sébastien Bourdais, who was injured after his serious accident in qualifying for the Indy 500 .

Alex Lynn and Pierre Gasly replaced José María López and Sébastien Buemi once because the New York City ePrix and the FIA World Endurance Championship race at the Nürburgring coincided .

Teams and drivers

All teams and drivers used the standard Spark-Renault SRT_01E chassis and Michelin tires .

Racing calendar

In 2016/17 fourteen races were to be held in twelve cities, two of which had not yet been chosen as a venue. In its meeting on June 24, 2016, the FIA World Council rejected an amended draft calendar, as it provided for the Mexico City ePrix to be postponed to April and the gap between the second race on November 12, 2016 and the third race on November 18, 2016. February 2017 seemed too big.

On September 28, the FIA published the final race calendar, which now missed the two races without a known venue. So it included twelve races in ten cities. In addition, the Montreal ePrix and the New York City ePrix swapped their places on the racing calendar. With the Montreal ePrix and the New York City ePrix, there were two events on the racing calendar for the first time, in which two races were to be held each time. In the two previous seasons, two races were held as part of an ePrix exclusively as part of the season finale in London . At the beginning of March 2017 there was another adjustment, the Brussels ePrix was canceled, instead two races were also held as part of the Berlin ePrix.

In addition, the Visa Vegas eRace took place on January 7, 2017 as an official part of the racing calendar . This was an e-sports -Event as part of the Sports Business Innovation Summit at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas , which by all 20 regular drivers and ten simracers were denied. The simracers had to qualify for the event in several online races ( Road to Vegas ), then each of them was drawn to a team in the FIA Formula E Championship. The qualification races and the Visa Vegas eRace were carried out with the rFactor 2 racing simulation . The participants were able to win prize money totaling one million US dollars , making the event the most highly endowed e-sports racing event up to that point. The event was based on a normal ePrix with two free practice sessions, qualifying followed by Superpole and a race including a mandatory pit stop (based on a vehicle change) . In addition, after the Superpole there was a qualification race in which the starting positions eleven to thirty were extended. The virtual racetrack was only announced the day before the event, a 4.99 km long circuit with twenty corners in Las Vegas. The Las Vegas Strip formed the start-finish straight , and the route also passed the Tropicana , MGM Grand , New York , Luxor and Excalibur hotels . The event was won by the Dutch sim racer Bono Huis (Faraday Future Dragon Racing) in front of the Mahindra pilots Rosenqvist and Olli Pahkala , who was the first to cross the finish line but was subsequently given a time penalty for a technical error in the FanBoost .
