Faraday Future is an American electric vehicle company founded in 2014 , a subsidiary of the Chinese Leshi Internet Information & Technology based in Gardena, California . The founder filed for bankruptcy on October 14, 2019.

Companies

Since it was founded in 2014, the company had built up a staff of 1,000 by January 2016, which had grown to 1,400 by January 2017. Financial partner is LeEco , a Chinese consumer electronics company.

Faraday Future is named after one of the basic principles of electric motor technology known as Faraday induction , which was named after the discoverer of electromagnetic induction Michael Faraday .

production

Faraday Future originally wanted a billion dollars in a factory in Nevada , invest north of Las Vegas with 4,500 workers. Construction of the factory also began in April 2016, but later had to be abandoned due to financial difficulties. On August 7, 2017, the company announced that a lease had been signed for a new production facility in Hanford and that renovation and preparatory work had begun. Two days earlier, 300 employees and “supporters” from Faraday Future had driven to Hanford to start work on site. The site has been a factory site belonging to Pirelli , which has been vacant since 2001, and is around 300,000 m² in size. There should be space for 1,300 workplaces, divided into three shifts. The project management for've Dag Reckhorn , the Vice President of Global Manufacturing adopted.

financing

In financing its $ 1 billion investment in a manufacturing facility near Las Vegas, the company expects Nevada state tax incentives of $ 335 million. Since the construction milestones necessary for the successive payments were not achieved due to a lack of liquidity, further financing came to a standstill, which at the end of 2016 initially led to a construction interruption of several months. In July 2017, however, the company had to stop building the factory due to a lack of investment funds.

vehicles

Faraday Future wants to be able to easily derive different vehicle types with different sizes, lengths, wheelbases and ranges for different areas of application from a modular vehicle platform. Depending on the configuration, a vehicle should be able to be equipped with up to four drive motors.

Concept study

Faraday Future Sports Car Study FF Zero1

In January 2016, the company presented its FF Zero1 single-seater sports car study to the public in Las Vegas at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) , but no production dates were announced for this study. The sports car should be able to drive 320 km / h with a peak output of over 730 kW.

SUV

FF 91

In January 2017, the SUV FF 91 , the first vehicle in a series development by Faraday Future, whose market launch was planned for 2019 after postponements, was presented at the CES in Las Vegas. In the meantime, a market launch is not expected until the end of 2020 at the earliest, but the company needs additional investors for this. The vehicle is designed as a connected car based on modern telematics .

The vehicle is said to have a peak output of over 770 kW and with its 130 kWh battery has a range of 600 km. Only 300 vehicles of the “Alliance Edition” edition are planned, the delivery of which is to begin originally in 2018 and now, after postponement, in 2019. [outdated]

The vehicle is said to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 2.5 seconds. Faraday Future plans some vehicles based on the Flexible Variable Platform Architecture (VPA) and has booked 64,124 reservations within 36 hours of the presentation.

Faraday Future produced the first pre-series vehicle of the FF 91 in August 2018. It is very much based on the study presented in 2017. The range is specified as 700 km NEDC or 600 km EPA. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 2.5 seconds. The price is said to be "over $ 100,000".

Racing

Faraday Future has been supplying the drive train (motors and inverters) for the Dragon Racing vehicles in the FIA Formula E Championship since the 2016/17 season and was also the team’s title sponsor this season.

criticism

The financing model was criticized and the realization of the vehicle construction was questioned. The financing was described by Nevada's Treasury Secretary Dan Schwartz as a " Ponzi scheme " and compared with the investment fraudster Bernard Madoff . In addition, at the end of 2016 there were reports of unpaid invoices to suppliers and the departure of senior executives. In February 2017, the company had to make severe financial cuts and scale back aggressive plans.
