The BMW i8 (development name l12 for Coupe , l15 for Roadster ) is a plug-in hybrid - sports car developed by BMW and part of the newly established 2010 BMW i sub.

From the concept study to series production

The previous “ BMW Vision Efficient Dynamicsconcept vehicle was first presented to the public at the 2009 IAA . BMW announced that it would build the concept study as a series vehicle from the end of 2013. The follow-up study called the BMW i8 was shown at the IAA 2011 . The series vehicle was presented at the IAA 2013. In March 2014, BMW published an initial price list with technical details. The first eight series vehicles were handed over to customers on June 5, 2014 as part of an event at BMW Welt in Munich.

The i8 Concept Spyder was presented at the Beijing Motor Show 2012. In November 2017, the production version i8 Roadster was presented at the LA Auto Show .

Both models (Coupé and Roadster) were produced on one line at the BMW plant in Leipzig . Production ended on June 11, 2020. A total of 20,448 copies of the i8 series were produced. So far, there is no direct successor. In the sports car segment, BMW has been offering the M8 Coupé and M8 Convertible since 2019 , with conventional bodies and V8 engines.

concept

The concept study served as a technology carrier for further developments by BMW (development designation I12). While energy-saving technologies were previously built into existing models, an overall concept for saving energy was developed from the outset with the BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics . The body and drive were specially designed with energy-saving aspects in mind. Experience from racing was also used. The study even reached a c W value of 0.22.

technology

The model-specific plug-in hybrid system of the BMW i8, developed and manufactured by the BMW Group, consists of a compact 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine with turbocharger , an electric drive and a lithium-ion battery that can also be charged from conventional household sockets . The combustion engine is located at the rear and drives the rear wheels with a maximum torque of 320  Nm and an output of 170 kW (231 hp). The electric motor with 96 kW (131 PS) (from May 2018 105 kW (143 PS)) rated output and 250 Nm torque transfers its power to the front axle. The total output is 266 kW (362 PS) (from May 2018 275 kW (374 PS)), which accelerates the vehicle from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.4 s (Coupé; Roadster 4.6 s)  and one electronically regulated top speed of 250 km / h. From 2015 to 2019, the drive was named "Engine of the Year".

96 lithium polymer accumulator cells serve as energy storage . The battery initially had a usable capacity of 7.1 kWh, since 2018 11.6 kWh, which increases the range from 37 km to around 55 km in purely electric mode (manufacturer information). This is a high-voltage battery that is placed in the center of the vehicle floor.

The BMW i8 has a drag coefficient (c w value) of 0.26. The use of the light and stiff material CFRP leads to component-related weight savings of 50 percent compared to steel construction with at least the same strength. It is used for the passenger cell including the girders in the doors. Components made of aluminum result in component-related weight savings of around 30 percent compared to steel construction; it is used for the vehicle frame and the outer skin of the doors. Magnesium is used for the support structure of the instrument panel . The axle load distribution is almost 50:50.

The chassis consists of a double wishbone axle at the front and a five-link axle at the rear with aluminum components.

The i8 is the world's first series-production vehicle that optionally uses laser headlights. Laser diodes are only a tenth the size of conventional LEDs . Nevertheless, they shine ten times as brightly and therefore twice as far - the high beam of the i8 should illuminate up to 600 meters. The deep blue laser diode rays are converted into white light with a color temperature of 5500 Kelvin with the help of a yellow fluorescent substance. That corresponds to the color of daylight. The energy consumption compared to LED headlights is less than half.

The roadster has frameless butterfly doors and a fabric roof that opens in 15 seconds. It can be opened up to a speed of 50 km / h while driving.

Since the facelift, which was presented at the LA Autoshow 2017 and has been available since May 2018, the i8 has a gasoline particle filter , so that the Euro 6d Temp standard is also met.

consumption

According to the manufacturer, long-distance fuel consumption with an initially empty traction battery is 8 l / 100 km, and significantly higher with a sporty driving style. Real consumption in hybrid mode is around 4 to 5 liters of petrol and 12 kWh of electricity per 100 km of driving. In pure combustion mode with an uncharged battery, around 7.2 liters of petrol are used per 100 km of driving. The content of the fuel tank is 30 liters. A 42 liter tank is available at an additional cost.

Fuel consumption according to the ECE driving cycle is between 1.8 and 2.1 liters of petrol per 100 km of driving.

design

BMW i8 Roadster , color E-Copper (2018–2020)

The vehicle is offered in the four exterior colors "Ionic Silver", "Protonic Blue", "Sophisto Gray Brilliant Effect" and "Crystal White Pearl Effect", each of which is in the sill area, the BMW kidney grille and at the rear with the contrasting colors "BMW i Blue" or " Frozen Gray ”. The vehicle is fitted with 20-inch alloy wheels as standard, which are available in three versions.

The BMW i8 will be available as a roadster (development designation I15) from May 2018. There are two new color variants for the exterior finish ("E-Copper metallic" and "Donington Gray metallic").

Interior design

The interior is offered in five design lines:

  • Neso (series): predominantly light interior
  • Carpo ivory white : contrasts of dark and light colors
  • Carpo Amido : dark interior in anthracite
  • Carpo Carum gray : contrasts of dark and light colors in gray and anthracite
  • Halo : full leather interior in brown and gray

(Status: 02/2015)

With the facelift in May 2018, a sustainable Accaro E-Copper seat cover will be offered.

Registration numbers

Since the market launch up to and including December 2019, a total of 2,124 BMW i8s have been newly registered in the Federal Republic of Germany. 2018 was the most successful sales year with 465 units. This is due, among other things, to the facelift and the roadster.
