prehistory

BMW M535i (E12)
BMW M535i (E28)

The M535i models based on the E12 and E28 series can be understood as the forerunners of the BMW M5 models . The M535i (E12 / 1S) was the first sports sedan ever developed by BMW M GmbH. It was powered by a 3.5-liter in-line six-cylinder that developed 160 kW (218 hp). The model was primarily intended for use in motorsport. Based on the E28 series, there was again an M535i, which was presented in model year 1985, but has nothing in common with the M5 itself. The M535i was a 535i series sedan with an aerodynamically optimized spoiler package, which, unlike the M5, was also available with an automatic transmission. It was powered by a 3.5-liter in-line six-cylinder, which, however, was structurally very different from the previous 3.5-liter engine used in the E12, E24 and E23 . Three different variants were offered in the E28.

The BMW M5 (E28S) was presented for the first time in the summer of 1985 and was handcrafted by BMW M GmbH until the end of 1987.

Except for a subtle front and rear spoiler, wheel arch extensions and lowering in connection with a larger wheel tire combination, it was an outwardly unchanged 5-series sedan. The slightly modified 3.5-liter four-valve inline six-cylinder engine from the street version of the BMW M1 was installed as the drive (engine code M88 / 3 ). This engine developed 210 kW (286 hp), accelerated the M5 from a standstill to 100 km / h in 6.1 s, according to the AMS test, and enabled a top speed of 251 km / h.

The first M5, like all BMWs built so far, had a standard drive and was only available with a 5-speed manual transmission. Thanks to the exclusive production at BMW M GmbH, more special equipment was possible than with the other E28 models. For example, a leather interior was available in which the entire dashboard including the center console, the headliner, the entire door panels and even parts in the trunk were covered with leather (costs depending on the scope: from 6500.00 DM). However, even the air conditioning had to be paid for.

When it was introduced in autumn 1985, the basic version of the car cost 81,000 DM. The E28S was never available in Germany with an exhaust gas catalytic converter - in contrast to the M635CSi (M6 for the USA) with the same engine, which had a catalytic converter with 260 hp (approx. 191 kW) performed. Over 2,200 M5s were built of this generation.

The M5 of the E34 series was available in two versions. After the introduction of the E34 series in January 1988, the first M5 version followed in August. This version was only available as a sedan - although a convertible had been thought about and a prototype had even been built - and was fitted with a 3.6-liter in-line six-cylinder engine that developed 232 kW (315 hp).

In spring 1992 the M5 was revised. The engine now had a displacement increased to 3.8 liters and developed 250 kW (340 hp). From this point on, the M5 E34 was also available in a small series as a station wagon, called M5 touring. A special feature of the sedan was the optional 4-seat system.

There was a final revision from mid-1994. This included a Getrag 6-speed gearbox, a larger brake system, 18 ″ parallel-spoke wheel, an active chassis (previously special equipment "Nürburgring package") and which was previously only installed in eight-cylinder engines wide front (kidney and bonnet).

With the introduction of the M5 ( E39 ), the S62 5-liter V8 engine, which was further developed from the M62 engine series, was presented. The third M5 was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in spring 1998 and was available from dealers from the end of the same year. In contrast to its predecessor, this was only offered as a sedan , the station wagon only existed as a prototype.

In order to reduce the production costs and the production effort, the differences between the German and North American models of the E39 M5 were kept as small as possible, they can only be recognized from the outside by the different indicators. Other differences are the positions of the catalytic converters and the front brake discs, which are of lower quality on the North American models. The sunroof and leather interior were standard equipment on the North American vehicles, while the sunroof was an extra item on German models. However, German vehicles were also offered with Alcantara interiors, which were not available for the North American market.

A total of 20,482 vehicles were produced in three types, 9992 for North America, 2595 right-hand drive and 7895 vehicles for the German and European markets. The right-hand drive cars were largely sold in the United Kingdom, Australia and South Africa, while left-hand drive cars were offered in Japan, despite the left-hand traffic there, as they were considered more prestigious among Japanese car enthusiasts. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km / h, but outside of Germany there was also the option of ordering the M5 without speed limit. The maximum speed should be 300 km / h.

In September 2000 the M5 also underwent the visual revision of the E39 series before production was discontinued in July 2003 after five years. The M5 E39 was the most powerful model from the M model range until its successor appeared in 2005.

technology

The E39 M5 is powered by a naturally aspirated V8 gasoline engine with four overhead camshafts , the drive of which is adjustable (double VANOS ). He has 5 liters and makes a maximum of 294 kW at 6600 min -1 . The engine's power is transferred to the rear wheels via a manual Getrag six-speed gearbox. A rear axle differential with a 25% locking effect is installed as standard.

The wheels are suspended at the front on a double-jointed MacPherson strut axle with aluminum links and gas pressure shock absorbers, and a stabilizer is also installed. The rear wheels are suspended from a multi-link, spring-loaded axle with a stabilizer, also with gas pressure shock absorbers. A recirculating ball steering system from the supplier ZF is used for steering with a speed-dependent servo effect. The car has a hydraulic dual-circuit brake system with anti-lock braking system , internally ventilated disc brakes with a diameter of 345 mm (front) and 328 mm (rear) are installed on all wheels. Tires of size 245/40 R18 or 275/35 R18 are mounted on the rims.

The M5 based on the E60 was formally presented for the first time as a near-series concept vehicle, the BMW Concept M5, at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show, and the series vehicle followed at the Mondial de l'Automobile of the same year.

The revised model was available from March 2007 (LCI). BMW changed, among other things, the door panels, station buttons for the iDrive , LED taillights and modified the headlights with daytime running lights via the corona rings . Also from March 2007, like the E34 before, the M5 was also available as a station wagon (E61), called “Touring” by BMW, which was shown for the first time at the 77th Geneva Motor Show in 2007.

50 pre-series vehicles had been produced by the time the M5 Touring was officially launched. The first pre-production vehicle of the M5 Touring rolled off the production line on December 1, 2005.

Without any further extras, the M5 sedan cost around € 94,700 in Germany (RRP) and € 97,200 as a station wagon (as of September 2009).

Production of the M5 (E60 / 61) was discontinued in summer 2010. In five years 19,523 sedans and 1025 touring cars were produced and delivered. This makes the fourth generation of the M5 the best-selling to date.

The M5 Touring E61 is to date the last M5 touring model built and is one of the least built BMW series models.

technology

The vehicle has a newly developed, high-revving V10 engine type S85 with a maximum output of 373 kW (507 hp). The engine is only limited to 8250 rpm. The engine blocks were manufactured by the Formula 1 foundry in Landshut

The M5 has a newly developed automated 7-speed manual transmission ("7-speed SMG Drivelogic"). The new SMG ("Sequential M-Transmission") changes gears in sport mode by 20 percent faster than in the BMW M3 (E46) . The vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.7 s and from 0 to 200 km / h in 13.9 s; the top speed is electronically limited to 250 km / h. With the M-Drivers-Package you can reach 305 km / h. In the USA, the M5 was also offered with the 6-speed manual transmission from the 550i from model year 2007. The 5-liter engine consumes an average of 14.8 l per 100 km with CO 2 emissions of 357 g / km.

The M sports suspension with a lightweight integral rear axle has three selectable programs (comfort, normal, sport). The iDrive menu also offers a choice of three engine programs, which can also be selected using the M button on the steering wheel: P400, P500 and P500 Sport. With the P400, the maximum engine output is limited to approx. 294 kW (400 hp), the P500 offers full power, the P500 Sport allows the throttle valves to open more spontaneously and shortens the gear change times. A button for canceling the engine power limitation is also available in the selector lever cover.

The BMW M5 ( F10 ) was shown for the first time at the 2011 International Motor Show in Frankfurt, previously it was presented at the M Festival in July 2011 at the Nürburgring and could only be ordered as a sedan with rear-wheel drive. In 2013 the vehicle received a facelift and from then on the competition package was also offered. In 2014 the special model "30 Years M5" appeared.

M5 (F10) rear view

engine

The M5 is powered by the newly developed V8 engine with "M-TwinPower-Turbo technology", consisting of twin-scroll double-turbo charging, an exhaust manifold that extends across all cylinders, direct petrol injection ("high-precision injection") and the fully variable valve control ("Valvetronic") driven. The engine offers a maximum output of 412 kW (560 hp) at 6000 to 7000 min −1 and a maximum torque of 680 Newton meters between 1500 and 5750 min −1 . This M5 was thus the most powerful series-produced model by BMW or BMW M GmbH up to that point. Only in 2014 was the maximum output increased to 441 kW (600 PS) with the "30 Years M5" model.

Over the five previous generations of the BMW M5, the maximum engine output had almost doubled from the first M5 with 210 kW (286 hp) to 412 kW (560 hp). The maximum torque had also doubled from 340 Nm in the first model to 680 Nm.

Thus, the predecessor had a 10-cylinder engine with five liters, which to 8250 min -1 could rotate while in F10 -M5 a 4.4 liter V8 engine with turbo-technique works, the maximum output of 6000 min −1 to 7000 min −1 . BMW M GmbH justified this change of concept in the BMW M5 with the fact that a turbo-charged gasoline engine is currently given far greater opportunities in terms of increasing efficiency and performance than the previous naturally aspirated engine principle. In order to develop a naturally aspirated engine with adequate performance, greater efforts and thus far higher investments would be required than would be the case with a turbo engine. The manufacturer's specifications for consumption and CO 2 are more than 30 percent below those of the predecessor despite the increased vehicle weight.

The maximum torque is constant 1500-5750 min -1 to. Also rectilinear is also the power output of up to 412 kW (560 hp), the constant 6000 to 7000 min -1 is applied. This means that the speed range that can be used for dynamic acceleration processes between the point from which the maximum torque is applied and the point from which the maximum power is applied is almost three times as wide as in the previous model with the naturally aspirated V10 engine.

The curb weight of the F10 is around 100 kilograms higher than its predecessor. The increase in output by around ten percent (412 kW instead of 373 kW) did not result in any significant improvement in terms of power-to-weight ratio (4.7 to 5.0 kg per kW previously).

M5 Competition

From September 2013 the M5 was also available in conjunction with the optional “Competition” package, which is subject to a surcharge; the maximum output increases by increasing the boost pressure in the upper engine speed ranges by 11 kW (15 PS) to 423 kW (575 PS) with the same standard consumption. The maximum torque of 680 Nm is available in an extended speed range of up to 6000 min −1 . The package also includes a modified exhaust system. The chassis is lowered by a further 10 millimeters and equipped with a sporty, more direct steering. From the outside, the BMW M5 Competition can be recognized with 20-inch M light alloy wheels in a two-tone look and mixed tires, as well as black chrome-plated twin tailpipes of the sports exhaust system.

On August 21, 2017, the M5 (series code F90) based on the BMW G30 was presented at Gamescom in Cologne . Its formal public premiere at a motor show took place again in September 2017 at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main; it has so far only been delivered as a sedan since March 31, 2018 at prices from 117,900 euros. The “M5 First Edition” special model, which was limited to 400 copies and costing EUR 137,400, was available at the market launch.

The body, u. a. With a special front apron, roof made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) , rear diffuser and small rear spoiler , unlike the G30 series model, it does not have the aerodynamic aid of Air Breather behind the front wheel arches.

In contrast to the previous models, the M5 has all-wheel drive for the first time . This was rear-biased and designed for driving dynamics. The sedan takes over the engine from the previous model. With a maximum output of 441 kW (600 PS), the new M5 is as powerful as the special models "M5 Competition" and "M5 30 Years M5" of the previous model; the maximum torque is higher at 750 Nm. An eight-speed automatic converter transmission is now used as the transmission. The sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.4 seconds and reaches 200 km / h in 11.1 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km / h or, if desired, 305 km / h.

Despite the heavier all-wheel drive, BMW was able to reduce the weight of the new M5 by around 15 kg.

M5 Competition

The M5 Competition presented in summer 2018 also has all-wheel drive . It is again a performance-enhanced variant of the series with a revised chassis. An exclusive paint job is also available for this model. The driving performance was slightly improved with slightly increased consumption. Production of the M5 Competition started in July 2018.
