Previous model BMW E53
successor BMW F15

The BMW E70 is a sport utility vehicle from the German car manufacturer BMW . It is the second generation of the BMW X5 and thus the successor to the BMW E53 . The model was unveiled to the public in August 2006 and was first officially accessible at the 2006 LA Auto Show . Sales in the United States began in November 2006, while in Germany it began in March 2007.

production

Like its predecessor, the E70 is manufactured exclusively in the American plant of BMW US Manufacturing Company, LLC in Greer , South Carolina (next to the X6 ). The choice for this production location is partly due to the fact that the USA is also the main sales market for the X5 and thus the hedging costs for fluctuations in the dollar exchange rate are reduced ( natural hedging ).

In autumn 2009, a limited edition model of 500 vehicles, 10 Years BMW X5, was released

The production was stopped in August 2013 because the production of the successor model F15 started.

The SCR catalytic converter for reducing NOx emissions had been installed in series production in diesel engines for delivery in the USA since the end of 2008.

technology

The second-generation X5 is equipped with a further developed all-wheel drive system, called xDrive at BMW . However, its chassis is preferably designed for use on paved roads. The optional third row of seats is new, but is only suitable to a limited extent for people over 1.70 meters tall. As standard it has the iDrive system with a color screen of up to 8.8 inches and eight additional, programmable station buttons.

Technical features that are also used in other BMW models are:

  • Active steering - changes the steering ratio depending on the speed and driving style
  • Adaptive Drive with roll stabilization and adaptive shock absorbers
  • Head-up display - projects important information onto the windscreen
  • Convenience access - ensures keyless access and engine start
  • Daytime running lights via the " corona rings " around the main headlight units
  • Four-zone automatic air conditioning

The Park Distance System , which can be integrated into the image of the optional reversing camera, is new .

Facelift

In spring 2010, the X5 was given a facelift (called LCI at BMW). The revised model was available from June 6, 2010.

No changes were made to the interior. However, the optics have been revised to the extent that the front apron is no longer only partially painted. In addition, the fog lights moved up a bit and are thus similar to the X6. Furthermore, the headlights and the parking light rings are now made in LED optics.

The engine range has been completely renewed. Above all, the new in-line six-cylinder diesel engine is worth mentioning, which has since found its way into almost all model series. In addition, the 6-speed automatic transmission was replaced by an automatic transmission with eight gears.

A number of driver assistance systems have also been introduced, such as Speed Limit Info, active cruise control or Sideview. This was especially important because there was no such support in the X5 before, although the competitors already offered this in this class.

Technical specifications

The “shift-by-wire” 6-speed automatic is standard equipment for all engines. It is not operated mechanically, but electronically by cable using the new "joystick selector lever". The gear is shown on a small display in the selector lever. The engines listed below were available until the model was replaced (renamed since production in August 2007).

BMW X5 M.

The X5 M, which was presented at Auto Shanghai 2009, has a V8 biturbo (original engine N63B44 ), which is the first turbocharged M engine. The M-engine is based on the well-known 4.4-liter V8, which is also installed in the xDrive50i on the X6. In addition, the X5M, together with the X6M, is the first M model to feature the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which, like the other electronic chassis systems, has, however, been M-specific for even more driving dynamics.
