The BMW X3 (internal name: E83 ) is a compact SUV made by the German car manufacturer BMW that was offered between the beginning of 2004 and mid-2010 . Production of the E83 ended at the end of August 2010.
Model history
The "little brother" of the X5 with the models E53 and later E70 was presented at the IAA 2003 and was on the market from January 2004.
At the IAA 2005, the Concept X3 EfficientDynamics, a concept vehicle with hybrid drive (BMW designation: Active Hybrid) was shown.
The revised version of the E83 appeared on September 23, 2006 .
The car was designed by Magna Steyr and built in their factory in Graz , Austria .
Production of the BMW E83 ended on August 31, 2010. A total of 614,824 vehicles were produced. The successor F25 was no longer produced at Magna Steyr, but in the US plant of the BMW US Manufacturing Company in Greer , South Carolina .
defects
Far too often the rear axle springs broke on the X3.
Facelift
A facelift for the vehicle appeared in autumn 2006. Small details were changed on the headlights, the double kidney grille, the front apron, the rear lights, the rear apron and above all the controversial interior. With the exception of the four-cylinder gasoline engine, the engine range has also been revised, most recently the 2.0-l diesel engine in autumn 2009. Another engine, the 3.0sd with twin turbo charging , has been introduced.
body
The X3 is only slightly smaller than its big brother, the X5 ( E53 ), and (measured up to the lower edge of the window) even offers a trunk that is 20 liters larger (480 liters). Due to the compact dimensions, it looks sportier and less beefy than its bigger brother X5.
safety
When Euro NCAP - Crash Test in 2008 he was awarded in the assessment of occupant safety Four Star (28 points) and in the child safety four stars out of five (39 points). Pedestrian safety was rated with five points and one of four possible stars.
Furnishing
The Exclusive and Lifestyle Edition were available from September 2008. The M-Sport package was supplemented by the Limited Sport Edition from March 2009.
Engines
The models are differentiated according to displacement and engine type . The number indicates the approximate displacement in liters, while the letter stands for the engine type (i = Otto engine , d = Diesel engine ).
All models are factory-fitted with xDrive all-wheel drive , which divides the torque or the power of the engine between the front and rear axles as required.
As of August 2008, analogous to the BMW models that are equipped with xDrive, all X3 models were designated with "xDrive" and the engine specification attached to it. Unlike before, the cubic capacity is no longer specified correctly, but is based on the designation of the other manufacturer models. The X3 3.0 sd, for example, was henceforth called xDrive35d.
The model was never offered with a diesel engine in the USA.
Sales figures
In 2005, BMW sold 20 percent more X3s than in 2004, bringing sales to 110,700 vehicles. On June 18, 2008, the 500,000th X3 rolled off the assembly line in Graz. Around two thirds were delivered with the 2.0-liter diesel engine, but the diesel models only had a soot filter from 2005. The 3.0-liter diesel engine was second with 25 percent. Only seven to nine percent of sales were gasoline-powered vehicles.
