Glas 1300 GT and Glas 1700 GT are sports coupes and convertibles from Hans Glas GmbH in Dingolfing . The Glas 1300 GT Coupé was presented at the IAA in September 1963 . From 1967, the BMW 1600 GT continued to be built by BMW with hardly changed coupé body, new rear axle and an engine from its own production until 1968.

In March 1964, delivery of the series car began. The body was designed by Frua in Moncalieri and then manufactured by Maggiora . The bodyshells were fitted out in Dingolfing. The engine, bored out to 1290 cm³ - like the type S 1004 with overhead camshaft and toothed belt - developed 55 kW (75 PS). This enabled the coupé and the cabriolet, which was available four months later, to reach 170 km / h.

In September 1965, the engine output was increased to 62.5 kW (85 hp); the maximum speed was 175 km / h.

From September 1965, the coupé and convertible were also offered with the 1.7-liter engine of the Glas 1700 . It developed 74 kW (100 PS) and had a top speed of 185 km / h. Because the Glas 1700 engine is taller than the long-stroke engine, the hood was required in the hood (previously there were only two trim strips on the hood). The hood with scoop was then used for all versions. In addition, the Glas 1700 GT was officially exported by Glas to the United States because they wanted to open up the market there.

BMW 1600 GT

With the takeover by BMW , the GT model was equipped with BMW technology from September 1967. The engine with 77 kW (105 PS) known from the BMW 1600 TI and the semi-trailing arm rear axle with coil springs were used instead of the original rigid axle with leaf springs. The body of the Glas GT was extended by a fitted radiator grille (BMW kidney grille) and the rear lights (round, from the 02 series) were changed by BMW. With this technology, however, only the coupé was built until August 1968. The car cost 15,850 DM in January 1968.

At the suggestion of Max Hoffman , the development of a convertible version of the BMW 1600 GT began in 1967. Work on two prototypes was started at Frua, but the plans were not developed further to series production. The only surviving prototype of the 1600 GT Cabriolet was restored by apprentices at BMW's Dingolfing plant in 2018 and is now in the collection of the BMW Group Classic .
