Moncalieri ( Piedmontese Moncalé , Latin Mons Calerius or Mons Calerii ) is a municipality with 57,465 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Italian metropolitan city of Turin (TO), Piedmont region . It is the second largest city in the province and is located in the urban area of Turin.
The neighboring municipalities are Turin , Pecetto Torinese , Nichelino , Cambiano , Trofarello , Vinovo , La Loggia , Villastellone and Carignano .
The municipality covers an area of 47 km². The renowned coachbuilder Maggiora was based in Moncalieri .
Town twinning
Moncalieri maintains a 1989 twinning with the Greek city Argiroupoli and since 1990 with the German town of Baden-Baden .
Bernhard the Second of Baden
Margrave Bernhard II of Baden , who died of the plague in Moncalieri on July 15, 1458 , was buried in the city's Marienkirche. The tomb was and is a destination for pilgrimages . Bernhard was beatified in 1769. In 2011, a canonization process was opened by the Archbishop of Freiburg Robert Zollitsch .
observatory
In 1859 the teacher, meteorologist and astronomer, Father Francesco Denza , set up a meteorological observatory in the former Barnabite College, Real Collegio Carlo Alberto di Moncalieri . In the following years he organized a national weather observation network from Moncalieri , from which the Società Meteorologica Italiana emerged . The weather station in the Collegio Carlo Alberto still exists. The Italian Meteorological Society has its headquarters there again.
