Bardonecchia ( French Bardonnèche , Occitan Bardonèicha ) is a municipality with 3159 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Italian metropolitan city of Turin (TO), Piedmont region . She is a member of the Comunità Montana Alta Valle di Susa . Most of the population speaks Occitan , and many also understand French .
geography
Bardonecchia is located at an altitude of 1312 m above sea level in the upper Susa Valley, about four km from the French border. It is the westernmost municipality in Italy. Turin is about 90 km to the east.
The municipality covers an area of 132.31 km². The districts of Lez Arnaus , Melezet , Millaures and Rochemolles belong to the municipality . Neighboring municipalities are Avrieux , Bramans , Exilles , Modane , Névache and Oulx . The patron saint of the place is St. Hippolytus of Rome .
traffic
Bardonecchia is home to the southern exits of the Mont Cenis road tunnel and the Mont Cenis railway tunnel . In terms of rail traffic, Bardonecchia station is located on the international Modane – Turin line and is the last station in Italy before the border with France, which runs roughly in the middle of the tunnel.
At the exit of the Mont-Cenis road tunnel, the A32 autostrada begins , part of the European route 70 . It leads to Turin, where it is connected to the Italian motorway network.

Bardonecchia has been a member of the CIPRA community network Allianz in the Alps since 2007 .
Sports
Bardonecchia is a winter sports resort. The snowboard competitions of the 2006 Winter Olympics took place in Melezet, three kilometers from the village center .
tourism
- Bardonecchia is the starting point for the Col de Sommeiller , the second highest point in the Alps that can be reached by two-lane vehicles.
- Hiking: Bardonecchia is the starting point of the high alpine long-distance hiking trail Alta Via Val di Susa , on which one reaches the lower Susa valley via the Mont-Cenis plateau and Rocciamelone . In addition, the place of classic starting point for hikes to the 3,178 m high, is already in France lying pilgrimage mountain Mount Tabor .
- A gondola lift leads from Bardonecchia to Hotel Jafferau (around 1950 m altitude). From there to just below Monte Jafferau stretches an alpine ski area that is easily accessible with lifts .
