Andrate ( Piedmontese Andrà ) is a municipality with 495 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Italian metropolitan city of Turin (TO) in the Piedmont region .

The neighboring municipalities are Settimo Vittone , Donato , Nomaglio , Borgofranco d'Ivrea and Chiaverano . The patron saint of the place is St. Peter .

Andrate is part of the Comunità Montana Dora Baltea Canavesana administrative community .

The place is 65 kilometers from the provincial capital Turin at an altitude of 836 m above sea level. The entire municipality covers an area of ​​9.32 km² and extends from 630 m to 2227 m. The municipality is located on the summit of an elongated mountain ridge, the Serra d'Ivrea , on the northern edge of the Po plain above Ivrea .

history

The place has its origins in the Middle Ages. The place was first mentioned in writing in a treatise on sheep breeding and agriculture in the region from the year 1222. The name Andrate comes from the two Celtic words and and art for divided land . The name can be traced back to the sharp demarcation to the neighboring community Donato by the mountain river Viola .

At first the place belonged to the possessions of the Counts of Canavese , later it was part of the diocese of Ivrea. Local feudal lords ruled from 1410.
