Chieri ( Piedmontese Cher ) is a municipality with 36,770 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Turin in the Italian region of Piedmont .

history

Chieri was controlled by the bishops of Turin in the 9th and 10th centuries and became independent in the 11th century. In 1347 it voluntarily submitted to Count Amadeus VI. of Savoy to save himself from the Marquis of Montferrat . It finally fell to Savoy in the 16th century . In 1785 Chieri became a principality under the Duke of Aosta .

The Gothic cathedral Santa Maria della Scala with baptistery is one of the largest in Piedmont and was built between 1405 and 1436 on the foundations of an older church.
