Roberto Rosato , called Faccia d'Angelo ( German : Engelsgesicht ), (born August 18, 1943 in Chieri , † June 20, 2010 ibid) was an Italian football player . In the 1960s he won the World Cup as well as the European Cup of National Champions and Cup Winners with AC Milan . With Italy he became European champion in 1968 and vice world champion in 1970.

He was considered a typical representative of the catenaccio and became one of the best Italian defenders of his time.

Career

Rosato began his career in 1960 at AC Torino in Serie A . In the following season 1961/62 he had already won a regular place and another year later he won the Coppa Italia with Torino .

In 1966, Nereo Rocco , who had already trained him in Turin and was now a coach at AC Milan , brought him to Milan , where he reached the zenith and the greatest successes of his career. In the first season he won the Italian championship and the European Cup Winners' Cup with Milan , for which Milan had qualified in the previous season. In 1968 , under coach Ferruccio Valcareggi , Rosato was European champion with the Italian national team and in the following season 1968/69 he won the European Cup and the World Cup with Milan .

In 1970 Rosato was a finalist at the World Cup in the Italian national team . Previously, he was a participant in the game of the century , the semi-final won 4: 3 after Germany against Germany . In this game he successfully guarded the tournament's top scorer, Gerd Müller . Only after Rosato was substituted before extra time did Müller score his two goals. In total, Rosato came to 37 missions for the Squadra Azzurra .

In 1972 and 1973 Rosato won the Coppa Italia twice with Milan before moving to CFC Genoa for the 1973/74 season. There he had to relegate to Serie B in the first season . He spent a total of two seasons with Genoa in Serie B before being promoted back to Serie A at the end of the 1975/76 season. Rosato stayed in Genoa for one more season, but only came up with a total of three missions before ending his career.

Rosato died of a June 20, 2010 at the age of 66 years suffering from cancer . To pay his final respects, the Italian national soccer team played with a black ribbon in the World Cup match against New Zealand that day .
