Lido Vieri (born July 16, 1939 in Piombino ) is a former football player on the position of goalkeeper and coach .

In 1968 he won the European Football Championship in his own country with the Italian national team , and in 1970 he became vice world champion with the Squadra Azzurra .

Player career

In the club

Lido Vieri was accepted into the youth department of AC Turin at the age of 15 , where he was seen as one of the players around whom a new team could be created after the Superga tragedy . In 1957 the goalkeeper was loaned to Vigevano Calcio . The following year, Vieri returned to Toro back and debuted on September 21, 1958 at 6: 1 victory against Alessandria in the Serie A . Lido Vieri played for Torino until 1969 , completed a total of 357 games during this time and won the Coppa Italia with the Turin club in 1967/68 . In the 1961/62 season he was awarded the Premio Combi as the best goalkeeper in Serie A.

In the summer of 1969 Lido Vieri moved to Inter Milan after a total of 15 years in Turin . With the Nerazzurri , the goalkeeper won the Italian championship under Giovanni Invernizzi in 1970/71, on top of which he set his personal record with 685 minutes without conceding a goal. After Ivano Bordon had contested his place in the Inter goal, Vieri left the Milan club after a total of 199 appearances in 1976 for Serie C club AC Pistoiese .

In the 1976/77 season, the goalkeeper rose to Serie B with Pistoiese , and in the following season they managed to stay up. At the end of the 1979/80 season, Lido Vieri ended his active career at the age of 41 with the club from Pistoia and moved to the coaching bench.

In the national team

Lido Vieri made his debut on March 27, 1967 in a 1-0 win in Turkey under coach Edmondo Fabbri in the Italian national team .

In 1968 he was appointed by Ferruccio Valcareggi as the third goalkeeper behind Dino Zoff and Enrico Albertosi in the squad of the Italian national team for the European Championship in their own country . Vieri did not play a game at the tournament, but was able to celebrate winning the European Championship with his team after beating Yugoslavia 2-0 in the final .

At the 1970 World Cup , which was held in Mexico , Vieri was number three in Valcareggi's squad behind Albertosi and Zoff . The goalkeeper did not play a game, but was runner-up after the 4-1 defeat against Brazil in the final .

The last of his four internationals for the Azzurri already played Lido Vieri on April 6, 1968 in the 2-3 defeat in the European Championship qualifier against Bulgaria in Sofia .

Coaching career

Lido Vieri's first station as a coach was also the last club he played for, AC Pistoiese , which he coached in 1980/81. This was followed by engagements with US Siracusa , US Massese , SS Juve Stabia and Carrarese Calcio until 1989 .

Until 2005 Lido Vieri then worked as a goalkeeping coach at his home club Torino Calcio , where he also acted three times as an interim coach for a short time.
