Enrico Albertosi (born November 2, 1939 in Pontremoli , Tuscany ) is a former Italian football player who made 532 championship appearances as a goalkeeper in the Italian Serie A from 1959 to 1980 at the clubs AC Florence , US Cagliari and AC Milan . In the Italian national team , he completed 34 international matches from 1961 to 1972 and was a member of the Squadra Azzurra at the four World Cups in 1962, 1966, 1970 and 1974 .
career
societies
Albertosi moved to the 1958/59 round from the then B division club Spezia Calcio in Serie A at Fiorentina . He made his debut for Florence on January 18, 1959 in a goalless draw against Lazio. He stayed with Fiorentina for a total of ten seasons, during which time you could win the Coppa Italia and the first ever European Cup Winners' Cup. The young goalkeeper was able to celebrate a double success in the 1960/61 round: he won the Coppa Italia with Florence and the European Cup Winners' Cup on May 17 and 27, 1961 in the two finals against Glasgow Rangers . Florence was coached by Nándor Hidegkuti and also had the competition's top scorer in their ranks with the Swede Kurt Hamrin as a six-time goalscorer. As the defending champion, Florence lost the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1961/62 in the final replay on September 5, 1962 in Stuttgart's Neckar Stadium with 3-0 goals against Atletico Madrid. The new coach Ferruccio Valcareggi sat on the bench and Albertosi was in goal, instead of Giuliano Sarti , who had guarded the goal in the 1-1 draw on May 10 in Glasgow in the first final game. With Florence he won the national cup for the second time in the 1965/66 season and the Mitropacup on June 18, 1966 with a 1-0 victory in the final over the Czechoslovak representative Jednota Trencin .
For the 1968/69 season Albertosi then moved to the US Cagliari , where he and the star striker Luigi Riva played a key role in ensuring that the Sardinian club won the Italian championship for the first and only time in 1969/70 . In 34 games, the acrobatic goalkeeper had only conceded eleven goals. He played at Cagliari until the 1974-75 season when he was appointed AC Milan moved. Here he won the national cup again in 1977 and was Italian champion for a second time in the 1978/79 season at the age of 39. After the 1979/80 season he ended his long and successful career here.
After he was banned for four years in the wake of a bribery scandal, but was then pardoned, he played from 1982 to 1984 with the fourth division Elpidiense. At the age of 45, he finally ended his goalkeeping career. Albertosi initially took care of his two Milanese restaurants. He also worked as a trainer and as a commentator for regional television.
National team career, 1961 to 1972
For the Italian national team , he took part as a substitute goalkeeper at the 1962 World Cup in Chile , where he was eliminated after the preliminary round as well as at the 1966 World Cup in England . In England, however, he was already the number one goalkeeper and was in goal when Italy suffered the bitter 1-0 defeat against North Korea , which meant the end for Italy. In the decisive qualifier on December 7, 1965, he guarded the gate in a 3-0 home win against toughest rivals Scotland. When the first leg was lost with 0-1 goals on November 9th, William Negri from FC Bologna was in goal.
After the disappointing World Cup in England Albertosi fought a duel with Dino Zoff for the regular place in the national team. At the start of the qualifying games for the European Championship in 1968, Giuliano Sarti guarded the goal in the first two games, followed by five games in a row by Albertosi. With 11: 1 points and 17: 3 goals, Italy became group winners and made it to the quarter-finals against Bulgaria. In the 2-3 defeat in Sofia on April 6, 1968, he again guarded the gate, from the second leg on April 20, Dino Zoff took over his post and was also in the two finals on June 8 and 10 in Rome of the final of the European Football Championship in 1968 and celebrated with the European Championship the greatest success of an Italian national team since the World Championship title in 1938 . Albertosi then went back to Mexico as a regular goalkeeper for the 1970 World Cup . On November 4, 1969, he was goalkeeper in the 4-1 home win against Wales in qualifying and with Angelo Domenghini and Luigi Riva , two other players from his former club US Cagliari were in action. In the legendary match of the century against Germany, he made it into the World Cup final against Brazil , which the Italians lost 4-1, weakened by the game against Germany. After the 1970 World Cup tournament , Dino Zoff of Juventus Turin became the national team's regular goalkeeper and Albertosi only took part in the 1974 World Cup in Germany as a substitute goalkeeper. His last international match was on June 21, 1972 in Sofia in a friendly against Bulgaria.
Albertosi played a total of 34 international matches between 1961 and 1972.
