Spezia Calcio is an Italian football club founded in 1906 from the Ligurian city of La Spezia . Other names are I Aquilotti ("The Eagles") and I Bianconeri ("The White-Blacks").

The club's home ground is the 10,336-seat Stadio Alberto Picco .

The beginnings

On 10 October 1906, the established Swiss -Kaufmann Hermann Hurny the football section of the Sports Club Spezia along with other Swiss. The club then played mostly on the Piazza d'Armi against seafarers whose ships were currently in the port of La Spezia . The Spezia FC was established on November 20, 1911, and Francesco Corio was elected as the first president . The first captain and also the first goal scorer of the Spezia FC was Alberto Picco . The latter fell a few years later during the First World War, at the age of just 20. The club played its first official game on January 20, 1912, on the occasion of a friendly against Virtus Juventusque from Livorno . The game ended in a 2-2 draw and Alberto Picco scored the first goal for the Adler. In 1919 the stadium was named after Alberto Picco, whose name the stadium still bears today. In the championship in 1920 the jersey color was changed, the club colors were white and black and no longer sky blue as before. These club colors were chosen because of the then top team Pro Vercelli , which also wore white jerseys and black shorts.

Winning the championship (1943/44)

In the 1943/44 season, an Italian football championship took place despite all the turmoil of the war. However, due to the war, only teams from northern Italy could participate. First regional playoffs were held. La Spezia was divided into elimination round D of Emilia-Romagna . At that time, the eagles had no leadership, as the last President Coriolano Perioli had been sent to a German concentration camp. Giacomo Semorile , the only one remaining from the former leadership, decided to contact a troop stationed in La Spezia, the (Vigili del Fuoco Spezia (de: Voluntary Fire Brigade of La Spezia)), so that they should provide the Spezia FC with players, so that the club could take part in the championship. The troop command approved this. And so the AC Spezia merged with the Vigili del Fuoco Spezia and the new club became VV.F. Specia renamed. As a coach could Ottavio Barbieri be required already with Genoa had won the championship and who had been in his youth international.

qualification

La Spezia played in Group D against Corradini Suzzara , Fidentina , Orlandi G. Busseto and AC Parma . La Spezia took first place with 13 points ahead of Corradini Suzzara. The first two clubs qualified for the next round. VV.F. Specia again on Corradini Suzzara, on Carpi and FC Modena . In the end, too, Spezia easily took first place and made it to the semi-finals of the Emilia-Romagna region . Here you met FC Bologna . Spezia get two wins and thus achieved VV.F. the final round.

Final round

Here you met AC Venice and the Grande Torino . In the first game, Spezia and Venice separated with a 1-1 draw. The second game could VV.F. win against Turin just 2-1. In the last game Turin showed its class again and won 5-2 against Venice. So the surprise was perfect, VV.F. was the new Italian champion.

recognition

One day after the surprising victory of La Spezia, the FIGC , the Italian Football Association, declared that this tournament was not a regular championship and that La Spezia had not won the Scudetto but only the War Championship. This despite the fact that the tournament had been designated the official Italian championship before and during the championship. After many years in which La Spezia had demanded the recognition of the Scudetto, on January 22, 2002, the FIGC awarded La Spezia an honorary title for winning the championship 1943/44 with the possibility of wearing this title forever on the jerseys and in the coat of arms to be allowed. Something that is otherwise only allowed for teams with at least 10 Scudetti.
