The Unione Sportiva Sassuolo Calcio , US Sassuolo Calcio for short and also US Sassuolo or Sassuolo Calcio , is an Italian football club from Sassuolo in Emilia-Romagna, founded in 1920 .
history
Beginnings
The US Sassuolo Calcio was founded in 1920 in the city of Sassuolo . Initially yellow and red, the club now wears black and green.
At first, Sassuolo did not take part in the Italian league, but played mainly in tournaments. Rivalries developed with various clubs in the area, for example FC Carpi , Roteglia, Vignola, Guastalla and Mirandolese.
Series D
In 1968, the US Sassuolo, which has been participating in the league for four years, secured promotion to Serie D , the fifth Italian division , for the first time . Before that, they had narrowly failed for three consecutive years. The time in Serie D was to last almost 20 years.
Initially, the club played in Girone B and occupied single-digit positions before they almost had to go back to the sixth division at the beginning of the 1970s. The "move" to the Girone D was just right. There Sassuolo experienced two completely different seasons with places 8 and 16. After several years in different seasons of Serie D succeeded in the 1980/81 season in Girone B of Emilia-Romagna place one, with which the club rose to the fourth division, Serie C2 .
Fourth class
In the 1981/82 season Sassuolo played for the first time in the C2 series . The club stayed there for around 15 years; the final placements fluctuated between first place in 1983/84, which was not enough for promotion to the C1 series because they failed in the relegation games, and 17th place in 2002/03 and 2003/04. One year after the near relegation, the club reached 5th place, which entitled to promotion relegation. There the AS Pizzighettone presented an insurmountable obstacle. In the following year, they were promoted to Serie C1, now called Lega Pro Prima Divisione , when AS Sansovino was defeated in the playoff final .
21st century
In recent years, the US Sassuolo Calcio experienced a significant boom. In 2006 they returned to Serie C1, now called Lega Pro Prima Divisione . There Sassuolo reached second place in the first season. The promotion did not succeed, however, because they failed in the playoffs at AC Monza Brianza . The following year, they were promoted to Serie B when the team finished first in front of US Cremonese and AS Cittadella , which followed Sassuolo into the second division.
In the first season in Serie B , the team from Sassuolo secured seventh place and just missed the promotion playoffs. A year later , the time had come: Sassuolo Calcio had the first chance to move up to the top division. After reaching fourth place after the last season, they faced FC Turin in the first round of the playoffs . After a 1-1 draw in the first leg, Sassuolo lost the second leg 2-1 and missed promotion.
In the 2012/13 season , Sassuolo secured the championship in Serie B with a 1-0 win against AS Livorno on the last match day. In the 2013/14 season , Sassuolo played in Serie A for the first time . The direct relegation could be avoided, Sassuolo reached a place in the secured midfield in the following season .
The 2015/16 season ended the club as sixth in the table. Since Juventus Turin was already qualified as champions for the Champions League , when they won the Coppa Italia, the associated international starting position fell to sixth place in Serie A. This meant that Sassuolo was qualified for an international competition for the first time in the club's history. With a 1-1 away win and a 3-0 home win against FC Luzern and FK Roter Stern Belgrade in the 3rd round or the playoffs, the club reached the group stage of the 2016/17 Europa League . There, however, Sassuolo failed last in a group with KRC Genk , Athletic Bilbao and Rapid Vienna . In league operations, the club secured the class again in the 2016/17 season , in the end they ended up in twelfth place. After the season, successful coach Eusebio Di Francesco , who has been in office since 2012 with a short break, accepted an offer from AS Roma . He was replaced by Cristian Bucchi . Bucchi was sacked on November 27, 2017 after losing 2-0 to Hellas Verona. He was succeeded by Giuseppe Iachini. With him, the club reached eleventh place in the 2017/18 season .
Stadion
The home of the US Sassuolo Calcio is the Stadio Enzo Ricci , built in 1972, with a capacity of 4008. Since this capacity does not correspond to the statutes of the Italian second division (Serie B), the club moved to the Stadio Alberto Braglia in nearby Modena after being promoted to Serie B in 2008 . League competitor FC Modena also hosts its home games in the 20,000-seat stadium .
Since the club's first promotion to Serie A in the 2013/14 season , the club has played its games at the Mapei Stadium - Città del Tricolore in Reggio nell'Emilia .
