history

After reaching Serie A in 1993 it became clear that the Stadio Mirabello was not enough for the top Italian league. It was also not possible to expand the stadium because it is in the middle of residential buildings in the city. A plot of land was selected on the northern outskirts and on August 5, 1994 work began on the new stadium. The stadium consists of the covered main and opposite stands. The two identical stands behind the gate are simple concrete structures without a roof. The four masts of the floodlight system are striking . They are located in the front part of the grandstand corners, not far from the corner flags, and have a large area bearing the name of the stadium. Thanks to the precast concrete elements used, the inauguration of the 25 billion building could already be celebrated in April 1995 . At the opening there was a game between AC Reggiana and Juventus Turin . The Juve won the game with 2: 1. In November of that year, the venue made its international debut. It was the last qualifying game for the 1996 European Football Championship against Lithuania. Italy qualified for the tournament as the best runner-up in the group.

On June 20, 2003, the benefit game Partita del cuore ( German  game of the heart ) , which has been held annually since 1992, took place in the Stadio Giglio. The 1981 founded Nazionale italiana cantanti , a football team made up of Italian singers and musicians, played against z. B. a team of Formula 1 pilots or politicians or a team of referees . 2003 came the musicians against the team Ferrari on. The Ferraristi with Michael Schumacher won 4: 1 and more than 520,000 euros were raised for the Italian Red Cross , the hospital Ospedale Santa Maria Nuova di Reggio Emilia and the humanitarian aid organization Reggio nel Mondo .

On September 19, 2004, the facility was expanded to include the I Petali shopping center . The center is located in the opposite stand and contains 40 shops and stores, twelve restaurants, an eleven-screen cinema and a fitness studio . In order to meet the new safety regulations, the stadium was u. a. retrofitted with turnstile systems at the entrances. On November 22nd of that year, the Italian national rugby union team competed against the Pacific Islanders in Giglio . The Italians lost 17:25 and for the Pacific Islanders it was the first win against a national team.

For the 2010/11 season of the Lega Pro Prima Divisione , a closed grandstand area was allowed to be opened to spectators again after the security technology had been installed. The number of spectators allowed increased to 20,084. The Under-21 men's national soccer teams of Italy and Sweden met on March 24, 2011 at the Reggio nell'Emilia stadium. The friendly game ended with a 3-1 win for the hosts.

For games with a larger audience interest, such as the Heineken Cup , took the rugby union -Mannschaft the Aironi ( Magners League ) from 2010 to 2012 the stadium.
