The Stadio Leonardo Garilli is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Emilian city of Piacenza . It is the sporting home of the Piacenza Calcio 1919 soccer club and is mainly used for soccer.

history

The stadium was opened in 1969 under the name Stadio Galleana and had around 16,000 seats. The first game took place on August 31, 1969 between Piacenza FC and AC Turin . The cup game of the 1969/70 season ended in a 1-1 draw. Three weeks later, the venue was officially opened at the league game between Piacenza and AC Perugia .

In 1993 Piacenza rose in the Serie A on. As a result, the stadium was renovated and expanded with tubular steel stands in the curves, so that the capacity was increased to 21,668 seats, since stadiums in the Italian premier league must have at least 20,000 seats. In January 1997, they renamed the stadium in honor of the recently deceased club president Leonardo Garilli in Stadio Leonardo Garilli order.

After serious riots on February 2, 2007 at the game Catania Calcio against US Palermo , in which the policeman Filippo Raciti was killed, stricter regulations ( Decreto Legge Amato ) were issued in the stadiums.

From 2014/15, in addition to Piacenza Calcio 1919, the city rivals AS Pro Piacenza 1919 played in the Stadio Leonardo Garilli in order to meet the increased stadium requirements after a promotion to the Lega Pro . However, AS Pro Piacenza 1919 was excluded from play in the 2018/19 season by the Italian Football Association . Since then, Piacenza Calcio has been the sole user of the stadium in 1919.
