The Stadio Angelo Massimino (from 1937 to 2002: Stadio Cibali ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in Catania , the second largest city on the Italian island of Sicily . It serves mainly as a venue of Catania , which is currently in the Series C plays.
history
The stadium was built in 1937 and can seat 23,420 spectators. During the Summer Universiade in Sicily in August 1997, the athletics competitions were held in Catania. The stadium was renovated for this purpose. In 2002 it was named after the former chairman of Catania Calcio, Angelo Massimino . After riots between the fans of Catania Calcio and the US Palermo outside the stadium, which ended with the death of the police officer Filippo Raciti, no Serie A games were allowed to be held at the Stadio Angelo Massimino from February 14, 2007 to June 30, 2007 .
