The Stadio Nereo Rocco is a football stadium in the Italian city of Trieste in the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia . The arena is named after the successful Italian football coach Nereo Rocco , who was born in Trieste.
history
In 1987, planning began for a new stadium in Trieste, as the old Stadio Giuseppe Grezar stadium from the 1930s no longer met the requirements. On the site of the old Valmaura slaughterhouse right next to the old stadium, the facility was built for around 32,000 spectators. The striking structure consists of four rectangular , roofed stands on the playing field; Overall, however, the stadium has a round external shape. The roofing consists of a steel frame construction and rests on concrete pillars at the corners of the stadium. The costs amounted to ₤ 100 billion (equivalent to approx. € 51.6 million )
On October 18, 1992 the first game took place in the new stadium. The US Triestina met Vis Pesaro (0: 1) and the 30,000 spectators were granted free entry to the event. The official inauguration of the stadium was celebrated in April 1993 during the international soccer match between Italy and Estonia .
In order to comply with stricter regulations regarding stadium security, the capacity of the arena has now been reduced to 28,565 seats.
In December 2009 the city expressed its interest in becoming one of the venues for the 2016 European Football Championship ; for which Italy applied alongside Turkey and France. In the end, however, the tournament was awarded to France.
Furthermore, Cagliari Calcio played the home games from March 2012 to May 2012 and March 2013 to May 2013 here due to security problems in their home stadium Sant'Elia . During the renovation of the Stadio Friuli , Udinese Calcio also played qualifying matches for the UEFA Europa League there in 2013 .
In addition to the football games, there are always concerts in the arena. So z. B. Zucchero , Vasco Rossi and Luciano Ligabue here.
