The Stadio Giuseppe Grezar is a work in rebuilding football stadium with athletics track in the Italian city of Trieste in the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia . From 1932 to 1994 the stadium was the home ground of US Triestina . The club then moved to the Stadio Nereo Rocco , which is in the immediate vicinity.
Since 1967 the sports facility has been named after the former soccer player Giuseppe Grezar ; who was one of 18 players at AC Turin , and a total of 31 victims, was killed in the Superga plane crash on May 4, 1949. In 2005 it was closed; it is currently being completely rebuilt.
history
The inauguration of the stadium, which previously had 25,000 seats, took place on September 29, 1932. On the second match day of Serie A , Triestina received SSC Napoli and they parted with a 2-2 draw. At that time, under the fascist rule of Benito Mussolini , it was named Stadio Littorio . The venue was built as one of eight stadiums for the 1934 World Cup . The Giuseppe Grezar is the only stadium used in the 1934 World Cup; in which the Italian national soccer team has not played an international match until today. After the end of the dictatorship in Italy, the stadium was renamed Stadio di Valmaura in 1943 , after the district of the city of Trieste.
In addition to the games of the US Triestina, some U-21 (1971, 1983) and U-23 or B-internationals (1934, 1955, 1968) of the Italians took place in the stadium. Juventus Turin and AC Milan used the Giuseppe Grezar for two European Cup matches . On November 13, 1963, Juve met OFK Belgrade in the first round playoff in the Messestädte-Pokal . Turin won 1-0 and advanced to the next round. Eight years later, on September 29, 1971, AC Milan and Digenis Akritas Morphou from Cyprus met in the second leg of the first round of the UEFA Cup . After a 4-0 win in the first leg, the AC won the second leg with 3-0 goals. The attendance record was set up on December 1, 1974 in the Serie D game between US Triestina and ASD Ponziana . The city duel attracted 20,360 spectators to the stadium; they saw a 0-1 victory for Ponziana. After moving to the Stadio Nereo Rocco, the facility served as a training ground and for athletics.
The facility has been completely renovated since 2005 and has been provided with an eight-lane athletics facility according to international standards. The cost was estimated at 13.5 million euros . Despite delays, the construction work should be completely completed by the end of 2011 by mid-2012 , in January 2010 the construction company Scarcia & Rossi went bankrupt . Then the sports facility offers a total of around 6,200 seats; 2,500 of which will be in the covered grandstand. The playing field made of natural grass will have the dimensions 100 × 60 meters. This enables soccer games as well as the throwing competitions in athletics. The stadium will have six changing rooms. In addition to the four team cabins, the two other rooms are intended for the coaches and referees. There will also be rooms for the athletics judges , medical treatments and anti-doping tests, as well as an electronic display board and a public address system . The athletics facility is equipped with modern technology for determining times and distances.
The planned opening date in mid-2012 could not be kept. In spring 2013, after a meeting between the city of Trieste and FIDAL Friuli Venezia Giulia , a regional committee of the Italian athletics federation FIDAL , the stadium's sports facilities were released. The grandstands and interior fittings such as dressing rooms should be completed later in the year. The inauguration was celebrated with a parade of 24 clubs and more than 200 athletes as well as the symbolic cutting of the ribbon.
In November 2013, Guido Germano Pettarin, chairman of FIDAL Friuli Venezia Giulia , complained about the disastrous condition of the stadium. Further construction has been suspended since the inauguration of the sports facilities. The grandstands are still without seats. The offices of the FIDAL Friuli Venezia Giulia and the changing rooms are housed in temporary arrangements. Wild boars came through perforated chain link fences and rummaged through the area. Consideration is being given to extracting the association, as the Grezar cannot be fully used in its state.
