The Series D is the fourth highest Italian football -Liga. It is the highest amateur league, the superordinate leagues are considered professional leagues. The league is organized by the Lega Nazionale Dilettanti (LND; It. National Amateur Association), a sub-organization of the Italian football association Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio , which regulates the entire amateur and women's area. Serie D is the only all-Italian amateur league in which clubs from all Italian provinces play. It is divided into nine regional groups (A to I), of which seven will be played with 18 clubs and two with 20 clubs in the 2019/20 season.

The allocation of the clubs to certain groups within the D series is basically geographic, but is determined by the LND. Matchday is Sunday, as in all Italian leagues. The season lasts from late August / early September to late May / early June with a short winter break between Christmas and Epiphany .

The first nine of the regional Series D groups move up directly to one of the three groups of Series C , while the second to fifth placed play-offs for possible further promoters, but can usually only perceive the promotion when out other clubs in higher leagues are not allowed to compete in at least Serie C for whatever reason.

The last two of the regional Serie D groups go straight to the fifth highest division, the Eccellenza , while the teams placed 13th to 16th compete in the playouts, in which two other relegated teams are played.

Just like the professional league, the amateur clubs in Serie D also have their own cup competition and championship (Poule Scudetto).

history

Serie D was founded in the course of the football reform in 1952/53 as the "Quarta Serie" (Italian fourth league, also Serie IV), back then as a regional amateur league divided into divisions. Just three years later, however, the mode of execution was changed and a distinction was made between two levels within the fourth division (Quarta Series I and Quarta Series II), which, however, only lasts for one year. Another year later (1957) the mode was changed again, the divisions were reintroduced, but a distinction was still made between first and second class (similar to the system of the Series C today) 1959/60 returned to the old mode (in 6 divisions) and renamed the league Serie D.

This mode was essentially retained until the 1978/79 season, but then had to be changed by changes in Serie C (which has since been divided into two divisions). 12 divisions of 16 teams each were introduced, with one team being promoted and three being relegated. This mode was maintained for 10 years before the number of teams was increased to 18 in 1990 and only six teams could move up. In the following years, the total number of participating teams was reduced again (from 216 to 162) and the series D was renamed Campionato Nazionale Dilettanti (in South Tyrol the official name is Amateur National League ). Since 1999 the league has been called Serie D again. Since 2014 it has been the fourth division again, after the two higher leagues were merged.
