history

In the past, from 1904 to 1912, the Seconda Categoria was the second stage of the Italian local, regional competitions in which main teams used junior and substitute players on the football field. New teams of the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio (FIGC) have been added to this league.

In February 1912, some new members of the FIGC began to work out a new regulation that provided for ascent and descent from the Seconda Categoria to the Prima Categoria. This new regulation was decided during the federal annual meeting in July 1912, so that the Seconda Categoria changed its name to Promozione, because the winning teams were enabled to move up to the league above. The FIGC had played the promozione until the 1921/22 season, when new rules and changes added a 3rd and 4th league to the league system.

In 1922, the Promozione was still the top division at the regional level. The 3rd league (in Italian = Terza Divisione) took the place of the Promozione, so that until 1948/49 no other championship received this name.

In 1948 the 3rd division ( Serie C ) had to be reduced because it was oversized. It was divided into three interregional leagues (North, Middle and South), which comprised different numbers of divisions and teams. Therefore, the association arranged that the teams should relegate in large numbers to the regional leagues. Their objections caused the establishment of a further league level between Serie C and the top regional league Prima Divisione (Italian for first division). They called them promozione. It existed until the end of the 1951/52 season, then it was downgraded to the top regional category and renamed Promozione Regionale .

The Promozione Regionale was renamed Campionato Nazionale Dilettanti at the beginning of the 1957/58 season and existed for two years. After the decision of the new rules on amateur leagues, the Lega Nazionale Dilettanti was created in 1959 and the Liga Campionato Nazionale Dilettanti was renamed Prima Categoria.

In 1967 a new project from the regional association of Lombardy was started. It was the introduction of a top amateur league (Amateurs, now Eccellenza) by reducing the divisions that made up the Prima Categoria. The FIGC gave this top regional level the old name Promozione. This league is now the second tier of regional amateur leagues. The change was introduced at the beginning of the 1991/92 season.
