Molise is an Italian region on the Adriatic Sea with an area of 4438 km² and 302,265 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). This makes it the smallest region after the Aosta Valley in terms of area and population. The capital is Campobasso . The region consists of the provinces of Campobasso and Isernia . It shares the history of the neighboring regions of Abruzzo and Puglia . In Molise there are also ethnic minorities of the Arbëresh and Moliseslawen . Both minorities can be found in the province of Campobasso.
Molise has only been an independent region since 1963. Before that it belonged to the Abruzzi and together with them it formed an administrative unit.

geography
The Molise landscape is divided into Alto Molise , which is characterized by high mountain ranges, partly unspoiled nature and quiet mountain villages, and Basso Molise , whose hilly landscape extends to the 50 km long coast of Molise.
In 2018, the region was affected by several strong earthquakes, up to magnitude 4.9 (according to Geoforschungszentrum Potsdam).
economy
In 2015, the regional gross domestic product per inhabitant, expressed in purchasing power standards , was 69% of the EU-28 average . With a score of 0.867, Molise ranks 15th among the 20 regions of Italy in the Human Development Index .
In 2017, the unemployment rate was 14.6%, above the national average.
