history
The origins and founding of the city are largely in the dark. Presumably it was built as a fortified camp by the Longobards at the foot of today's castle hill before the 8th century . Originally the place was called "Campus vassorum". After the Normans had conquered southern Italy in the 11th century, the settlement developed into a commercial and administrative center. The Monforte-Gambatesa ruled the city between 1330 and 1745. They had the castle and a coin built. Later the city belonged to the Di Capua, Gonzaga , Vitagliano , Carafa and various Roman families. In 1927 the Cathedral of Campobasso became the seat of the Archdiocese of Campobasso-Boiano .
