The Cathedral of Campobasso or the Trinity Cathedral ( Italian Cattedrale della Santissima Trinità ) is a church in Campobasso in Molise, Italy . The cathedral of the Archdiocese of Campobasso-Boiano is consecrated to the Trinity and has the rank of minor basilica . After an earthquake , the church was rebuilt in a classicist style at the beginning of the 19th century and expanded as a cathedral in the 20th century.

history

The church was originally built as a baroque structure under Andrea de Capoa in 1504 and destroyed by an earthquake in 1805. The new building was completed by the architect Bernardino Musenga in 1829. A collegiate chapter was attached to the parish church. From 1860 until 1900 the church was used as a barracks. With the transfer of the bishopric to Campobasso, the church was elevated to a cathedral in 1927. It was then enlarged by Tullio Passarelli and Vittorio Tiberio until 1933. The central nave was raised and an apse was added.

architecture

The facade consists of a hexastyle pronaos and a triangular gable above it. The campanile is on the left in the transition to the town hall.

The interior in the form of a basilica is divided into three wide naves with coffered ceilings. In the vault of the apse, a fresco by Romeo Musa depicts the event of Pentecost. Below is the high altar with a ciborium supported by Corinthian capitals. Behind the altar is the organ built in 1993 by Ponziano Bevilacqua with 41 stops on three manuals and pedal.

Two large chapels extend from the side aisles, frescoed by Amedeo Trivisonno. In the left aisle is the granite baptismal font in the form of a square basin from 1745.

The polychrome stained glass windows depict the saints defending the dogma of the Trinity: Augustine of Hippo , Hilary , Anastasius and Nicholas.
