Guglionesi (in the local dialect: Ujuniše or Uiniše ) is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 5130 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Campobasso in Molise . The municipality is located about 44 kilometers northeast of Campobasso on the northern bank of the Biferno .

history

The Frentans, an Oscar -Samnite people, settled in this area. Presumably, the ancient city of Usconium is today's Guglionesi. The settlement was also important for the Romans, so that it must have had several thousand inhabitants in the late 1st century BC. Usconium was destroyed by the Goths. The inhabitants fled to the mountains and founded the Pagus Collis Nisii or Collenisyus there . In 412, Colleniso became a Usconium novelty . In 801 the village passed to the Duke of Spoleto. In 1496 the fortifications were razed by Charles VIII .
