San Giuliano di Puglia is an Italian commune in the province of Campobasso , in the Molise region .

geography

The community lies at an altitude of 452 m. It borders on the towns of Bonefro , Colletorto , Sant'Elia a Pianisi and Santa Croce di Magliano .

history

The first traces of a settlement in the 2nd century AD document the remains of a Roman villa . During the Lombard rule, the place belonged to the Duchy of Benevento . In the 8th century, Landolfo and Pandolfo, rulers of Benevento, founded an abbey that was consecrated to Helena the mother of Emperor Constantine and which was later taken over by the Benedictine order . After the plague epidemic of 1348 the abbey was abandoned. Under the Normans , the place was given to changing feudal lords as a fief . During the rule of the Anjou , the place went one after the other as fiefs to the Angioini, De Capua, Sanseverino and Manfort families until it was given to Bartolomeo Rota, Marchese of Collotorto, in 1718.

The community became known through the earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale on October 31, 2002. It was also still noticeable in Abruzzo . At that time 29 people died, 26 of them were children in a school. 61 people were injured. There were 2 other major earthquakes in the area and the village had to be evacuated. The school collapsed as it was already in disrepair and many other buildings had to be demolished as they were badly damaged. After this quake, around 5000 people in the region were homeless.

Attractions

The Romanesque church of San Giuliano was destroyed in the earthquake of 1456, rebuilt, redesigned in 1730 and expanded as a three-aisled basilica. In the 2002 earthquake, San Giuliano was badly damaged.

About 5 km from the village, on the site of the former abbey, is the simple chapel of Sant'Elena , which was built with stones from the abandoned and destroyed abbey. The core of medieval San Giuliano is believed to be in this area.
