Portocannone (in the Albanian dialect: Portkanuni ) is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 2406 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Campobasso in Molise . The municipality is located about 48 kilometers northwest of Campobasso .

history

Portocandesium was first mentioned in a document in 1137 . In 1320 the name of the place was already Portocanduni . The first Albanians came here in 1461. The emigration is accompanied by the bustling Skanderbeg . Today, however, the Albanians are a tiny minority with around 2% of the population in the municipality.
